What names have you come across where siblings or couples you know have the male and female version of a name? 

I have a friend called Jacky and his sister is Jackie (short for Jacqualine).

I once met a girl called Dominique and her brother was called Dominic

I know a lady called Kerry and her husband was called Carey (which everyone mispronounced as 'Kerry' so they pretty much had the same name)

Me too... I thought it would have been the same as Kerry/Kerri/Carey right? My cousin's dad name is Kerry & he's dating Carey. So we just call them Kerry & Carey Jr.

Regional pronunciations

This comes up every time, it's just a regional pronunciation difference.

On the west coast etc., we do pronounce them the same. On the east coast and in other places, the vowel sounds are pronounced differently.

Kerry would be like keh-rry (with the first vowel as in kettle)
Carey would be like ca-ry (with the first vowel as in cat)

Try starting to say those other words and putting a "ree" on the ends and you'll see what I mean. :)

I'm in New England myself but most of my friends here aren't New England born and bred so I couldn't make an accurate generalization based on how they sound. I was, however, tutored intensively by one of my NJ friends on the proper NJ/NY pronunciations of Mary/merry/marry.

I am sure there are many local differences, though. After all, Henry Higgins could pinpoint his speakers to within a few blocks of their London residence, right? ;)

Actually I pronounce it differently yet again.
Kerry, Carry and Carey all sound extremely different in my accent. Maybe I should record it instead of trying to type it phonetically :p

I agree with Kerry being the same sound as kettle. But the "a" from cat sound, like you said Carey... that's actually how I pronounce the word "carry". Carey is different again - it's a long "aaaiirr" sound. But if some of you people can't hear a difference between kettle and cattle then there's no point really typing it out lol cos you'll read it the same way too. So confusing!

I can hear the difference, for sure. I just don't say it naturally myself.

As I wrote above, a friend spent some time tutoring me on the difference between Mary, marry, and merry. My own pronunciation naturally is closest to the way he says marry.

Now I've gotten to the point where I can get the e vs. a distinction fairly accurately, but when you give me Carey vs. Cary vs carry, I'm going to throw up my hands.

The funniest part was having another friend INSISTING that I was making a vocal distinction (in my normal accent) for words like these. while I KNOW I was doing no such thing. I tried saying two of them and getting him to guess which one I was saying... and he realized I was right. ;)

in New Zealand we'd pronounce Carey as in 'carry' or cah-ree. But so many New Zealanders also pronounce it the same as Kerry as in Care-ee so it doesnt make much difference really :D up to the individual to correct the pronouciation of Carey i guess!

Perhaps I shouldn't take it so personally lol but I really hate identical names in the same family. What's the point of giving everyone a unique first name if you don't? You might as well all just not have one and go by your surname to identify you, since you'd all have the same name anyway.

me too! I was like huh? I was thinking they aren't said the same though until I read this comment!! here (New Zealand) Stephen would be pronounced as Steven, Stef-en, or Stef-aan with the long 'a' sound depending on how the parents decided it would be said :)
