i'm commenting on one post... and it makes me wanna make a new post! lol sorry. i'm just copying/pasting from my comment.

my question is:

have you come across anyone named after a dead family member/friend... like, they were named as a token of rememberance?

ok, my best friend is naming one of her sons *first name or middle* Atticus; i may as well.
story behind:

her best guy friend (ergo, one of my friends/aquaintances) in High School was a huge skater and always sported at least one item on him that was of the Atticus line. So she dubbed him, and his nickname became Atticus, and after a year or so no one remembered to call him by his real name - he just BECAME 'Atticus'; even to his family. lol.

He joined the Army after high school, was shipped to Iraq, made it home after infantry touring, sadly died in an accident while stationed in KY.
So i think we're going to bring that name into more common-place use in his memory. :) i think it's a lovely name. :D

Well, my brother is named after our maternal grandfather, who died several years before my brother was born. It's not 100% as remembrance b/c it's fairly traditional to name people after grandparents, but my parents didn't follow the tradition with me. My brother also gets called by his full name by the family, which is definitely related to the fact that my grandfather always wanted to be called by his full name, but *everyone* called him by a nickname.

indeed
i also have a friend named tollienne (pronounced toll-yin). his father was stationed in france and befriended a man who had the last name tollienne, a cajun guy from Louisiana who ended up dying some years later of natural causes. his first name was john which seemed way too plain so they dubbed him tollienne jacob richards.

he totally goes by toll road. its funny.

My sister's middle name is Grace. Grace was the youngest sister of my great-grandmother who died when she was only an infant- I don't think Grace was more than a coulpe weeks old when she died. Sure, it might be a bit morbid. But I think using a dead family member's/friend's name is a nice gesture, sort of a memorial to the person.

That's a very nice story, and I'm terribly sorry for your loss. :(
My middle name is Tess, named after my paternal grandmother Theresa (who went almost exclusively by Tess) who died of breast cancer when my father was 13.

I have plans to use Darryn as a middle name for one of my children, in memory of my Uncle who died in a motorcycle accident.

Ha, it's so weird to see a Carlton icon on LJ. But yay, go Blues and all of that.

In answer to the original question, my sister's middle name is June after our grandmother who died a couple of months before we were born. At least, I think that's why she's got the name - it could be because we were born in June. Ah, I don't know. I'm assuming it's the grandmother thing.

My youngest daughters middle name is/was my great grandmothers first name. She passed away long before I was even born, but I love the name Kathryn.

My next girl (with new hubby) will have McKenna as one of her middle names to honor a close friend of ours who recently passed.

I have an Aunt named Carla who died in 2000. My cousin had a daughter, and named her Qarla. Yes, with a Q.

Also, Edward is a big family name as well.

I have a book with my family tree going back 6 generations to about 1742 and lots of my ancestors were named after siblings who had died when they were infants. For example one family had a fourth son called John William who died when he was a baby. The fifth son was also called John William. The same happened for many of my female ancestors. Obviously I don't know if it definitely was out of rememberance, but still quite fascinating especially for such a long time ago!

i love the name atticus. i plan to use it as a middle name with benjamin. however, i'm using it after the character in to kill a mockingbird, and also just because i like the way it sounds.

my friend's mother's name was beth (she died about four years ago). she's pregnant right now and they're planning to use the name elizabeth for a girl, which would be partially in memory of her mom, although they plan to use liz(zie) as the nickname.
