One of the things I read in this community is that, while someone likes the name, it's too trendy or common. My question is, if you were forced to choose, would you rather have a common name (i.e. Jennifer or Christopher) or a trendy name (like Madison or Aidan)?

I like the common names Michael, Catharine, Joshua, Jacob, and even Sarah (although I can't use it because its my step sister's name). That said, I love the name Aidan. I tried to get my sister to name my first nephew Aidan and that was almost 11 years ago (he's a Johnathan...and usually has 2-4 others in his class). Having lived with a common short name for the last 30 years, I'd have to go trendy (within reason) but not one of the 394872937 names people have come up with that rhymes with Aidan:)

mm I basically agree with requiem_marrow. one of the names I wanted for a boy would be Jace Aiden which is def trendy id say. but i also love and would use David James which is extrememly common IMO. I like both worlds so to speak. It doesnt bother me if something is trendy really, I mean some of them are annoying IMO but b/c aiden is or addison or madison are considered trendy, it wouldnt bother me b/c either way there are millions of people out there and someone will always have your name somewhere. Being to Trendy doesnt dictate my choices for names.

If I like a name, it doesn't matter to me. Most of the names I really like aren't so popular, but I like names like Jennifer, Aidan and Hayden and would consider them. I dislike some trendy names like Avery and Addison because I don't like the usage on girls (they sound too last name-y or masculine) nor do I like the way they sound.

I really like trendy names but, like any name, it has to be something I like. I tend to not like the normal names, like Ashley and Josh that you find in every room. My name is Ashton, and I'm a female. I've had many people tell me that they knew a guy once named Ashton, etc. I love my name and I would never trade it for a common name :-P (Even though my middle name is Marie...)

Definitely trendy. I'd rather be one of several with the same name if it was actually interesting, not just another Ashley or Jessica.

To me, Ashley and Jessica are trendy names from the 80's. They both scream 80's to me, and you don't hear them around that much on babies anymore (around here anyway!)

My given name has been common for about fifty years, and was pretty much at the peak of trendy around the time I was born ... and people wonder why I have a huge complex and named myself after a herb. ;)

Seriously though I prefer common, in the 'timeless classic' sense. Those tend to have more meaning and history to them; which is important to me. Also if I had one then I'd go by an uncommon short form/variant anyway.

Some of the names on my list do fit current trends (e.g 'old lady', surnames etc), but are still relativly uncommon names. Which I like because it's good balance of being distinct but not totally random.

I'd go either way,

Avery Alexis, Avery is trendy right now and Alexis is pretty common.

Logan Oliver, same deal.

although I just realized that Avery Alexis, would be two boy names on a girl which is trendy too... oh well I guess I'm trendy.

I don't know. I think it depends on if it was something I was attached to before it became trendy. I really wouldn't name someone Aidan, because although I liked it a little when I first heard the name, I hear it ALL THE TIME now. On the other hand, even though Jack is really trendy now, its been a relatively popular name all along, and I still really like it. The problem with trendy names though, is that they always make me think of the time period in which they were popular. Like, Stephanie automatically makes me think of mid to late 80's. Although its a lovely name, I can't rid myself of the association.

I'd rather have a "common" name like John or Mary or Elizabeth. The way things are going, they actually AREN'T that common anymore. They are timeless, and they will never be outdated, the way that trendy names are. Someone says Jennifer to me and I think late 1970s, early 1980s. In twenty years, someone will say "Madison," and everyone will think "early 2000s." Mary and Catherine and John and James will never have that problem.

I think Jennifer and Christopher are just as trendy as Madison and Aiden. Hello, 1970s!

common, definitely. there's a huge difference between having a popular, yet traditional/classic name like jacob or michael and having a horribly trendy name like madison or adian that is going to be completely "out of style" in a few year's time. look at the name lisa, or jennifer, both of which were insanely popular in the 70s and 80s, and both of which have been dropping in popularity at alarming paces. one could only hope that the same will be true of the trendy names these days (although i'd much rather name my kid dylan or lisa than madison or jayden).

i like classic names, many of which are also popular - jacob, michael, benjamin, samuel, luke, etc. but, you'll never find me naming my kid something trendy.

Trendy names ARE common names. Like Aidan or Emma, those are not only trendy but they're like the #1 most commonly given names now.
