[identity profile] spikes-sexkitty.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
so i was commenting on another post, and it got me thinking about the "wow, i was ALMOST named that" feeling i had when i once asked my mom, "what were some of the names you and Dad were thinking about when you were going to have me?"

has anyone else ever asked their parents that? and then been SO glad you had the name you did?? i thank God my mom was stubborn. Since i was her second child, but my dad's first, she agreed to let him choose the names, but she had to agree on the final one. Here are some of those she remembered:

*Girl*
Paris
Raven *which would have sucked since i came out blonde*
Kiro *k-eye-ro*
Alexandria
Venicia

*Boy*
Dakota
Austen *rather than Austin b/c he didn't like that we were Texan and it's our capital*
London
Thame

If you couldn't tell; my dad's a lover of travel. He'd been to all those places and loved them.
The name/s my mother finally consented to?
*boy* Austin Tarr (she hated the spelling with an 'e' and Tarr was his mother's maiden name) & *girl* Alexandria.
no middle name b/c i was born before they could agree to one that went with it. plus i have a long last name and they were afraid i wouldn't learn to spell my name until i was in like 2nd or 3rd grade.

my name is hana jane (HAH-nuh, rhymes with nirvana, not pronounced like hannah). my parents were also thinking about emma or karen.
if i had been a boy, i would have been named aidan george. keep in mind, this was 20 years ago though..long before aidan became really, really trendy.

That's a great story.

Interesting fact: I've met a few girls named Raven and they were all blonde.

I would have been Aaron or Andrew if I had been a boy, and Jenna or Laura as a girl. I'm a twin so name possibilities come in pairs for me.

Most of the place names listed I usually associate with girls, except for Austin and possibly Thame. Glad you turned out to be a girl.

I almost was Ariana. My mother said she was very glad I was a girl, because they didn't have any boy names for me. I have to say that Jennifer fits me best.

I don't actually mind Austin Tarr that much, though living in Texas would be a bit problematic, imo. I associate pretty much all of the boy names as girl names, except for London.

I had to squee over Raven, because she's a Teen Titan. Dunno if you'd want that association, though...

Raven seems to be a stereotypical goth name, even though I've never met an actual goth named Raven. I wonder why. I think TT's characters are all superheroic teen stereotypes, jock, computer nerd, class clown,
goth, and princess, right?

And I associate London with a girl because of that one girl in Suite Life of Zach and Cody.

Well...the cartoon, yeah. The comic version is a lot different. The characters are less extreme-y.

The name Raven seems Goth-like probably because of Poe's famous poem. It's a dark, alluring name so people automatically go "Goth!", even when the person with the name isn't like that at all. Then again, I've never met any Ravens IRL.

I think I've seen one episode of Suite Life and I certainly don't remember names...

I was going to be Brianna, but my aunt talked my mom into Bethany instead. That was pretty good I guess because my aunt ended up marrying someone later with a daughter a year younger than me named Brianna. If I were a boy I was going to be Ryan Leonard.

I was almost named Sabrina or Tabitha. If I had been a boy, I'd be a Jason. They settled on Lauren.

If I was a boy, I would have been Antonio John. *gags* My mom wasn't very creative and just liked Jennifer, the most popular name at the time. Now I'm married to a Jason. Our parents weren't very original back then.

my mom wanted to name me Emma. My dad refused cause he says it sounds like enema. If I were a boy, my dad wanted to name me Guy (pronounced like GEE with a hard G) after the hockey player Guy LaFleur. My mom hated that idea, and they couldn't agree on anything. So they decided that since I have 2 aunts and 2 uncles I'd be Mary Linda or John David. While I don't really like Mary that much (especially as a little kid cause of all the rhymes) I think it fits me better than Emma would have.

Actually I think Raven is pretty ok =). But Paris is awful. Mostly because of Paris Hilton.

My dad wanted Ariel Nicole for a girl, which would have sucked after Little Mermaid came out, and I just don't like the name. And for a boy he wanted Travis Clark, Travis because my older brother is Trevor and Clark is his middle name. I hateeeeeeee that name!

Him and my mom had made a deal though, she named a girl and he named a boy, she had this "feeling" I was a girl, so she knew she'd win, which means I love my mommy because the final decision was....

Paige Elizabeth, which I absolutely love and couldn't imagine being anything else. :)

But Cairo spelled KIRO? That's almost as embarrassing as Cairo pronounced "Kay-ro". oh, ain't bein' from GA a hoot...

Go, your mom! Females for the naming win!

Their first daughter was always going to be Wendy, and if a second, Tessa. I'm the Tessa. Neither of us have middle names because Wendy and Tessa were the ONLY girls' names my parents liked.

Sidenote: My mother liked Rafaela (the Portuguese spelling — both of my parents were born in Brazil), but my father hated it. I think I could have made a decent Rafaela.

my mom was going to name me Cherry. ughh. thank goodness she changed her mind to Nicole instead. Cherry combined with my last name sounds 100% like a porn star name.

I wrote a story (when I was a kid) about sisters named Raven and Robin. Haha. I thought that was so clever.

And I have to say that unlike some of the other commenters, I think the place names listed for boys work better (or at least equally well) for boys.
And Paris can be a unisex name, as well. Doesn't everyone remember when Paris Hilton was dating Paris Latsis? Am I the only one who reads too much celebrity gossip?

Glad to be a girl...

I'm glad I was a girl.
I have two older brothers: Blaise & Brice...my mom is Brenda, dad Billy, so of course my mom wanted me to have a B name...so I was going to be Brock. (If I was a boy)
The bad thing? She wanted me me to have her middle name of Lee.
Brock Lee.
Not funny.
Girl names she had were Paris, London, and Brookelynn (Which I actually like).
Since I turned out to be a girl, my dad insisted that he name me (since my mom named my brothers), therefore I am now
Amber Lee...much better then Brock Lee...
Could have been bad, but people who know what I was supposed to be named still tease me about it a little bit lol its actually quite funny if you think about it...Almost.

I remembered another story...

She is now Manon (Muh-non) Elizabeth.

I think if I was a girl i was always going to be Kate Elizabeth
But if I had been a boy dad wanted to name me Alec, which is his middle name and mum hated. And so do I.
Mum wanted to name me Joshua. Which dad hated, and so do I!

I don't think they ever actually decided on a boys name, and I'm so glad I'm a girl cause I love my name!

My dad wanted to name me Indigo. Cool name, but didn't go well with my last name. :P

My mum liked Celeste or Stephanie. Stephanie is okay, but I find it incredibly popular and kind of boring, no offence to anyone called Stephanie. :-\ Celeste is just... no. I'm glad they settled on Alison, I like the name, it's classic but not too common, I've never had another Alison in my class.

If I had been a boy, I would have been Alexander Marc, I think? But it might have been Alexander Andre.

My grandpa wanted to name my mum Gertrude. He wanted to call her Trudy for short. My grandma wouldn't let him. XD

it was between Cecelia and Adrienne. but then an acquaintance of my mom's from college (that my mom didn't like that much) had a baby a few months before I was born and named her Cecelia, so I became Adrienne. I'll have to go back and thank that lady some day... Cecelia is sooo not me.

no idea what I'd be named if I had been a boy, but if I were a boy, I wouldn't be me, so it's not the same as thinking I could be me but named something else instead.

They knew i was a girl before names were chosen, but i would have had one of my brothers names had i been a boy i guess. Jeffery Cameron and Cameron Gary.

My parents just plain out decided on a girl's name (though they didn't know what I was until I was born). I'm not sure if they had picked out a boy's name, so I'll have to ask. But the girl's name they thought of was Samantha and I would be called Sam for short. This was my great-grandmother's name and she HATED it so she refused to let my parents name me that "god awful name". So, I became Heather Marie. Not too bad I think. :D

My mother wanted to call me Megan, but Dad vetoed it because he thought was 'too Welsh'.
Dad considered Angela or Victoria, not sure why those got vetoed.
Of those I like Megan best; I do have Welsh ancestry so don't object to that, and Meg would suit me.
If I was a boy I would have been named Richard.

For my brother it was kind of a toss up between Richard and Matthew. They went with the former. No ideas for girl names.
I love Richard; it's very classic but uncommon amongst our peers, good nn options too. Matthew seems a bit dull by comparison.

My mom had 2 girl names picked out though: Daniele and Stacy
It's a good thing she did.. she missed her last ultasound and I ended up being born with.. SURPRISE a twin sister ^^* Yeah, this was in 1983, so she had no idea she was having twins... good thing she had two names picked out!
