A very nice woman I enjoy being friendly with at my bank recently had her baby girl...

Avari Reese (Last name that starts with R)
And yes, that's a pathetically bastardized form of Avery, I asked.

Ugh. I had such high hopes...

And I'll have all you "Only-young-&-teenage-mothers-name-their-babies-kre8tively" thinkers know that she's over 30.

I like it. It's simply a variant, isn't it? You could say the same thing about Ashleigh or Hailee.

I too read it as "ah-VAH-ree".

Well, I think some parents like to bestow their children with names that make them stand out from the crowd and why not? If everyone used the same spelling, it would be unbelievably dull. I once had four Ashleys in my class. I felt unbelievably sorry for each one of them.

Avery is growing more popular every year so I'd understand why your friend would use a variant but I've no problem at all really with people mixing it up.

Exactly. Don't people think before they name their kids? Or at least think of something other than, 'I want my kid to stand out! I want everyone to know that I am my kid is original and unique!'? Apparently not.

i have been browsing the community. i have always loved names, and just felt i should comment here.

I have a very dull run-of-the-mill name for the time frame in which i was born. That being the 80's and my name being Theresa.

I spent my entire life correcting people that said it wrong, and spelled it wrong. And its not that my mom and dad spelled it wrong. It just how its spelled.

I dont see how anyone can say a name is spelled wrong, or butchered. I dont see why being creative with your childs name is such a bad thing.

I would pronounce that different

ah-VAR-ee (like Atari) instead of AY-ver-ee

Wait - that's supposed to be pronounced Avery?

I didn't even think of Avery when I saw it.

To me it should be pronounced "ah VAR ee"

I saw a-VAR-ee too.

Which sounds kind of nice actually, I like that better than Avery. I hate it when names are given stupid spellings ESPECIALLY when it changes the pronunciation.

When I see Avari, all I can think of Ovary. Without knowing, I might be likely to guess Ava-ree.
Which, to my ears, is much different than Avery, which I pronounce as Ave-ree.
And I think Avery is a man's name. And an unattractive man's name at that. Worse on girls. =(

Geez, I thought I was the only one. I've always thought of like a farmhand or ranch owner man when I heard Avery but everyone else seems to think its a great girl name.

Oh no, trust me, I know that a lot of these people who name their kids 'unique' things are well away from being teenagers, that's the sad thing.

I thought it was a VAR ee, and that it was probably a legit indian/middle eastern name.

Although I'm not a fan of creative name spellings, I actually think this one looks prettier than Avery

Somebody could anonymously point her toward this post, where EVERYbody is saying "It's not pronounced like Atari with a V?! Ah-VARR-ee?"

Except it's too late now, and the lifetime of people in real life making this mistake is just beginning. Hold on to yer butts...

Avari Reese.... spelling heightens the combo's resemblance to the word avarice (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/avarice).

Until you said Avery I was thinking Avarice without the -ce.
