Just wondering what you guys think of the name Tanith for a girl?
I absolutely love it but couldn't use it because my partner's surname is also two syllables ending in 'th' and it'd sound stupid.
Are there any names you love but couldn't use because of how they'd sound with the child's surname?

Date: 2007-06-01 05:40 pm (UTC)I like Tanith, but I don't think I'd use it. It is pretty, though.

Date: 2007-06-01 06:37 pm (UTC)I think it's a cute name. It's not super feminine, but that's not necessarily a negative.

Date: 2007-06-02 02:06 am (UTC)I have a stereotypical Irish surname beginning with "O'D", and my boyfriend does as well. We'll have to steer clear of names ending in 'O' or 'D'.

Date: 2007-06-02 03:45 am (UTC)I always loved the names Ronan and Rowen but the fiances last name is Ronan. So I have to stay away from most R names and names that end in -in sounds.

Date: 2007-06-03 10:33 am (UTC)I asked her once why she got an interesting name, and one of her sisters is called Nicole.
Apparently her parents chose it because one is Danish, and one is English, and the other family would be offended if they used a danish/english name. So her name is Romanian (I think?) Anyway, later they realised they could use french names.
I like her name, you know she's extremely unlikely to meet someone else with her name, yet its obvious how to spell it. It doesn't sound like anything bad, so there aren't any horrible nicknames. Plus, the fact that its not really feminine means that anyone can borrow her bus pass or things like that.
Its annoying that you have to consider last names when choosing first names. I figure I'm going to choose a first name I like, and then choose one of four surnames (my mother's surname, my father's surname, other person's mother's maiden name, other person's surname) that fits best. I guess I'll grow out of that idea though. (Currently some of my reasoning is: grrr, its so unfair that girls are supposed to change their last name, i'm NEVER doing that. and its so unfair that last names get lost when the children are girls. I personally have both my parents last name, my mum's last name is one of my middles.)
