I thought of this today after having two hours of extra band rehearsal.

A girl in my section in band is named Montana. I believe I've heard the name elsewhere also, but it got me thinking.

Ever hear of anyone named after a state?

Lol, does she like her name?
My friend hates hers. She was meant to be called Melissa, but her aunt had her baby first and her cousin got that name. She would rather be a Melissa than a Georgia.

I love the name and I tell her that everyday. She always argues with me.

There was a girl in the camp I worked at whose name was a state name, and a very, very odd name for a child. For some reason, I can't remember what it was. I want to say Hawaii, but that definitely wasn't it. Ugh, now it's going to bother me. Oh, no- wait. I think it was Nevada.

Nevada is so pretty! I'd consider naming a girl Sierra Nevada, since it means "snowy evening" in spanish :P

Hanna Montana? *scratches head*

I know there might be difficult to be stuck with a name like that, but some of them work very well as names.

I've kinda always thought that Indiana would be a nice name.

I've read books where there were characters named Jersey (where her parents met or had their honeymoon or something like that) and California (son of Japanese immigrants and went by Cal).

My boss has 2 state named kids, but they're not for the states. First is a daughter named Montana, but it's after Joe Montana, and the other is Jersey, because while she was pregnant the movie Jersey Girl was on a lot.

I have a friend (who's a guy) named Dakota and I know a Hawaii and an Alaska (they're twins) and I'm fairly certain my next door neighbour's daughter is named Duke. Which is not a state, but is still a place. And my boyfriend said one of his coworkers is named Botswana, which is actually a country but still...

I met a girl once whose name was Arizona. I have also met a Virginia, a Georgia, a Dakota, and a Montana.

I have also met quite a few people with city names. Like Cheyenne, for instance.

Our son is Jordan and Dakota is our name choice if we have a girl. But we are in Australia, so they are more seen as names than places.

I've heard Louisiana, and I think it's very pretty because it can also be patronimic for Louise, so a real name, not just a state.

Tennessee would make a cute name :P

But actually some of the state names come from names themselves, like Virginia, Carolina, Georgia

My grandmother was named Virginia. I've always loved Georgia as a name, possibly thanks to Georgia Hubley from Yo La Tengo. I knew a girl named Carolina a few years ago. My family had a dog (female) named Dakota, and at the same time, I had a friend with the name Dakota (male). I've also read that Vermont Royster was named for his grandfather, whose siblings were all named after states in the union. And if books count, there was a girl named California in the book The Ballad of Lucy Whipple (and she hated her name).

I think several state names would work very well, mostly for girls. I used to live in Indiana, and think it would make a pretty name. Tennessee is pretty, as well, but would always make me think of Tennessee Ernie Ford (which wasn't his real name). I've always liked the flow of Nebraska, but can't imagine actually calling a person that (what would the nickname be? Nebby? Aska?), and I think Arizona would work as a name, too.

My aunt's dog is named Dakota -- and in my opinion, state-names (aside from Virginia, Georgia, and Carolina, which actually are female first names) are only fit for pets.

I've met Virginias, Georgias, and Carolinas-- but the thing with those three is that they're states but they were names first. Georgia and Carolina being the feminine of George and Charles, respectively.

Other state-names, I don't like so much.

Hm... state names don't really work if you're outside America, do they? I live in Australia; can you imagine a kid running aroud called New South Wales, or Northern Territory? Hehe. Victoria works of course, being an actual name, and I suppose Tasmania *could* if you wanted to be really out-there... though why you would is beyond me. I know boys called Tasman, after the sea. Sounds like Tasmin, which sounds feminine.
