Names

I've got a list of my favourite names. I'm not planning on actually having any children, and even if I do, I'll make sure they're not stuck with a horribly uncommon name - so most of the ones below are really out of the question, even if I love them. Also, being Norwegian I a) have to make sure that the names work in both English and Norwegian (even if Norwegians can pronounce English names approxomately right) and b) I still don't like nick names all that much because I'm used to people actually being called Jonathan, Christian, Christopher, Alexander etc. I do use Chriss myself, though, because English people have problems pronouncing my names correctly.

Comments and thoughts are appreciated.

Alvienne (al-vee-ENN) Alice -> Alvean -> Alvienne, works in N/E.
Ann-Charmaine Ann-Cha for short. I knew a Chinese girl by this name. Works in N/E
April - Works only in English
Autumn Lee/Gale - Too fanciful and only works in E.
Belissa - Turkish name. Works in N/E.
Egwenne - From The Weel of Time, and only works in E.
Meiling (May-Lynn/Mai-Linn) first alternate spelling works in E, the second in N, but it sounds tons better in E.
Nyneave (Nigh-NEEV) From The Weel of Time, and only works in E.
So-Yun Korean name from one of my favourite books, but doesn't really fit. Works in N/E.
Thi-Ha (TEE-ha) Vietnamese and works in N/E.
Vienna Works in N/E, in N Vienna's called Wien, so it loses it's city refernece.

Ash - Sounds like the word for 'yuck' in N.
Ashley, - I realise it sounds too feminie, and only works in E.
Ask - The a's pronounce like 'a' in 'part,' but really short, it only works in N.
Cassidy - Works in E
Disraeli - (dis-RAY-lee) Just too weird, but perhaps as a middle name. It's the surname of a British Prime Minister from the 19th century. Works in N/E.
Dmitri - Quite normal and works in N/E, but perhaps Dimitri is a better spelling.
Jace/Jaycee Works in E.
Julian - Works in N/E, but there's something a bit off about the name.
Justin - Works in E.
Kaycee Works in E.
Nikita - Favourite boys names and works in both E/N, but it sounds much better in accents wich are not American.
Raphael - Spelling is a problem in N, and it's a bit too... I don't know, formal.

E=English
N=Norwegian

Not that this is an answer or any help...
But my sister knows this guy called Aleksander who is Norwegian and Americans can not pronounce it at all. They mess up the "ks" sound all the time.

How do they mess up the "ks" sound? Do they confuse it with "sk" or something?

They sort of ignore the 's'.

My name's cassidy, but with a K...so Kassidy lol. And I've found Kassidy to be found a lot less than Cassidy if you wanted a more unique name.

I had a cat called Vienna, partly named after the classic Ultravox record 'Vienna' and partly with Rigsby's cat in the UK TV comedy 'Rising Damp' in mind. IF you use this name, be prpared for lots of people saying 'This means nothing to me' and making comments about Joe Dolce's comedy single 'Shuttupayaface', which famously kept 'Vienna off the no. 1 spot in the UK charts.

Meiling is cute ; )

Btw, Belissa isn't a turkish name, but I'm curious as to what source said it was. Or did you know a turkish person with that name?

Ooh weird, haha I wonder if her name was made up. I'm sure she is very Turkish but the name just isn't at all. Hmmmmmmm...or else it is just super uncommon. It's cool either way ; )
