What's a boy name that could be shortened to Rory?  I have Gregory, but I'd like some other ideas...

And what are your favorite unique names that you may or may not use?

Rory has traditionally been a name in it's own right for years. So I can't really think of anything it could be short for.

Well I guess that depends on your definition of 'unique'; but the most unusual names I like are ...

Girls = Aesara, Branwen, Bryony, Cerridwen, Delphi, Seren, Symphony
Boys = Arlo, Beckett, Caelum, Calyx, Dadealus, Finnegan, Leif, Taliesin

Persephone is my favourite 'unique' name, shortened to Sephy. Although I've completely nicked it from one of my favourite books, so it's hardly that unique, I suppose.

Percy always reminds me of the Harry Potter books and also of pink pigs!

Rowan? I like Rory on it's own, though.

I'd always known that Rory comes from Aurora, for a girl.
For a boy, it makes me think of Lawrence, mostly. But Gregory also would fit to it.

Roran? It wouldn't really be a shortening syllable-wise, but Rory would be a little less formal.

Not a good choice if you're not into using names from books, though.

Lyra :) I love that name, but it used to heavily remind me of extremely bad fantasy books [excluding His Dark Materials]. It just started to sound cliche.

Girls: Anamaria, Robin, Esme, Ophelia, Guineviere, Mariel, Athena, Esmerelda, any flower name [like Lily, Pansy, etc.]

I'd totally name my kid [or character!] Regina, though.

Boys: Errol, Phoebus, Marcus Anthony, Lucius, Briar, Claude, Wolfgang, Haku, and so on.

I'm a big history/mythology/classic geek, can you tell? XD

I've always preferred Ruari, the Gaelic spelling. I'm planning on calling a daughter Aurora and using Rory as a petname - I love boy names on girls! I went to school with a Jonquille (French for daffodil, btw) who went by Jonny. Adorable!

As for unique names, I've got my heart set on Bethlehem for a girl but it's been well and truly vetoed! As has Balthazar for a boy.

Rory is the Anglicised form of Ruaidhri, so I don't know if that helps you at all.

And yeah, it is a name in it's own right. However, it often reminds me of the Irish name Rordan.

I also think of Rory as a stand-alone name. The only full name I can think of is a girls' name and it's Lorelei.

Favorite unique names are Freya, Katherina, Lisette, Catrine, Isolde, Eleni, Alethea, Calanthe, and Idony for girls. Leander, Llewelyn, Wesley, Caspian, Dorian, Griffin, and Rowan for boys.

Rory is perfect on it's own. The onl problem is it occasionally (re: more than you would think) gets misread as Roy. It is still one of my favorite names. ;)
