Old naming practices in the South
May. 6th, 2007 06:05 pmI'm researching my genealogy and have been corresponding with a family member who sent me the following information. Apparently, in the 1700-early 1900s in the Southern United states, there was a standard naming system. It went like this:
First son: named after his paternal grandfather.
Second son: named after his maternal grandfather, often sticking on the mother's maiden name as a middle name.
Third son: named after the father's oldest brother
Fourth son: named after the father.
First daughter: named after the mother
Second daughter: named after her maternal grandmother
Third daughter: named after her paternal grandmother.
So, here's a fun thing: according to this guide, what would your children be named?
My names:
First son: Stephen John Verdier
Second son: Daniel Froehlich Verdier
Third Son: My husband has no brothers!
Fourth Son: James Martin Verdier
First daughter: Catherine Verdier
Second daughter: Rosemary Verdier
Third daughter: Donna Verdier
I like them all except Donna!

Date: 2007-05-07 02:56 am (UTC)Only boys I can name:
Marshal Bowling (I'm already thinking of using Bowling as a son's middle name, because I absolutely adore my mom's side of the family)
Girls:
Jewel Yvonne (Though my mom goes by Yvonne)
Wilma Jean (I've also been wanting to use Jean as a middle name, only cause I like how it sounds will you say it with a first name, Wilma Jean, Norma Jean, etc.)
Andddd, can't do the third girl.
