Today is my birthday and I have been an only child all my life and my dad just called me and told me that my step-mom is pregnant.

I'm a melting pot of emotions...but I"m turning to you all!
I want to add and subtract from my list before giving it to them and seeing if it helps any.

So i'm enlisting you all to help name my future brother or sister (HOPEFULLY SISTER.)

leo and eliott have been favorite names of mine for a long time. I also like liam a lot.

for girls I like audrey, amaya, scarlet and tatum.

while I love many of the names, it would likely be rough to be 16 year old Ingrid or to be a 30 yr old single woman named Love or a vegetarian named Angus.

I hate the idea of yet another Kimberly or Jennifer, but I caution against a name so unique or with such a different spelling that the person constantly has to spell it for everyone and can never find a keychain at a waterpark with his/her own name on it.

Also, watch out for famous people as namesakes... for instance, right now, someone named Cedric may bring to mind Cedric the Entertainer and thus a heavy-set Black man, which might be tough for a shy little blonde.

What about a more common first name and a unique middle name? This allows for some movement since the parents/family can use the middle name for the child and, if s/he wants something more professional or something later in adulthood, can switch over? Otherwise, Zion might have a more difficult time finding a job in the business world than something (wrongfully) considered to appear more professional.

it has also come to my attention that if i get help in naming the thing at all, it'll most likely be middle name.

rosalie (shakespeare's "as you like it"), sophia/sofia (Golden Girls -loooove the show), bella (caroli from the olympics came to mind, but also Belle from "Beauty and the Beast), paisley (Brad Paisley, the awesome country singer)

gable (of course Clark), lennon (obviously John), brody (might become more popular thanks to the guy from stupid "OC" ?), westley (hotel name)

these stuck out to me as the most unique without reminding me of someone super famous right off the bat as well as being names I could likely spell if asked to make the kid a name tag or something. I also included what they made me think of next to them

Bah, Cedric is me and my boyfriend's top choice for a son. I find it doubtful that once people know our child they'll confuse him for a middle aged black man. I find celebrity associations like that a silly reason to avoid otherwise wonderful names. Some associations are tough to impossible to fight (Kermit, Linus, Aaliyah, Dawson) but I don't think Cedric is that bad. *shrug* We like it anyway. Personally reminds me more of Ivanhoe than anything really.

I also grew up with a girl named Ingrid and people loved her name. Easy to spell, say, remember. Stood out in a sea of Jennifers (my name btw), Christies, Carries. She was fine.

Common "key-chain" names. :P I'd rather use a name that top 50 and mail order custom pencils and keychains for my kids. The world needs more diversity not less.

Never meant to offend and likely, if I were to have kids, I wouldn't end up with keychain names either, however I'm one with a common name/uncommon spelling and at 22, I'm already so sick of having to spell it out and pronounce it for people that I half want to change it to the wrong version just so it's easier! :P

rosalie, sofia, audrey, lenore, esme, francesca, astrid, scarlet, and penelope are all nice. astrid is one of my most favorite names. so is audrey. i think frankie is a cute nickname for francesca. i knew a little girl who went by that nickname with that first name. i like esme and lenore for their literary history. and penelope was my french name. :D it was pronounced pen-el-oh-pay. since my sophomore year in high school, that's who i've been pronouncing it. and i think another pronunciation is pen-el-ope. i'm sure you're horribly interested in why i like the names.

leo, lennon, brody, hollis, liam, wesley, nolan, seamus, and flynn are the ones i like out of the boys. john lennon is probably my favorite person ever. flynn is just cute. i'm mildly obsessed with the name brody at the moment. and i adore the name leo.

Great list. I'll comment on a few of them if I have something to say.

From the girl list I like or love: Rosalie, Ingrid, Audrey (this spelling), Simone, Francesca, Maya, Iona, Calliope

Izzie -- Some of your meanings seem off to me. A lot of name books are terrible references. I think this meaning is coming form the boy's name Isaac. For girls, Izzie is usually a nn for Isabella which isn't related to Isaac at all.

Bella - So trendy. Seems very insubstantial to me, to name a child "pretty" or "beautiful." I don't care for it. Anabella is nice. Or Aribella or Isabella (though that's very, very popular these days.)

Paisley - Don't care for the fabric association. Makes me wonder if there's a twin named Plaid.

Amaya - I always hear "Am I a...?"

Clover - I love hippy/nature names and always liked the potential in this one, possibly with the nn Chloe. But it just seems like a silly, childish name to me.

Evangeline - The association with evangelical Christianity is extremely negative to me. I don't like it at all.

Pistol - Oh no. No.

Linus - I really wish this would become more popular and shake the Peanuts association. I think it's a great name other than that.

Leo - Love it

Scully - Way too X-files

Lennon - Nice

James - I like it as a fn, no nn. As a mn it's boring. And Jamie isn't nearly as handsome.
