This may be repetitive of some past posts, but I'm struggling with boys names and need some new, fresh ideas!!! My husband and I have already decided on a girl name (Grace Jane - named after a grandmother and great grandmother) but we can't agree or decide on a boys name that we like. Some of the one that I like - just don't sound right with our last name (Which is Miller). For instance, I like William (I know, its boring, but I like simple names!) Anyway, when you say William Miller - because it ends in an M and begins with an M, it literally sounds like it becomes one word to me - Williamiller. I don't like that. Also, because our last name ends in "-er" any FIRST name that ends in ER sounds funny to me too, such as Tucker, Parker, or whatnot. So, we're sort of at a loss. The few names that I like include Owen, Ethan, Dylan (not sure if that sounds okay with our last name either?) and Evan. My husband doesn't like any of them, thinks they are "too preppy." (in his opinion). Some of his choices include Jack, Lucas, or Luke.
Anyway...we're at a loss. There isn't a single name for a boy that jumps out at me, or one we both think - "wow, that's it!" I'm just looking to see if anyone has any ideas, maybe a name I'm missing? Also, want to stay away from names that have become really trendy in the past few years like Aiden or Jayden, for example. I'm trying to think of something strong, yet classic.
Of course, I'm drawing a blank...so turning to you all!
Thanks for any ideas!!!

Date: 2005-07-08 08:45 am (UTC)The names you like are actually quite popular and trendy. Your husbands resistence to them must be based on what was common when he was a kid. I'd show him some lists of recent birth announcements and popularity charts. All the names you mentioned are used quite freqently these days, and don't come with a preppy association at all imo. They are Average Joe kind of names now.
Here's a link to probably my favorite naming site. It shows the most recent rankings of the top 1000 names. You can also chart the ranking of a specific name for the last 15-20 of so to observe the "trendy factor" -- which names hold about constant appeal, which have made big leaps in recent years.

Good luck, I hope you find something you both love!

Date: 2005-07-13 02:32 pm (UTC)I ended up naming my daughter Jayd'n Scot...
Up until I was seven months pregnant all my ultrasounds came back with the doctor not able to tell whether it was a girl or a boy, but guessing that it was a boy. So I was going to name her Jace. The night before my sixth ultrasound I had a dream that I was watching a little girl write her name on a piece of paper in a classroom, and I knew she was my daughter, and she wrote her name on the paper, and that is exactly how she wrote it. When I went to the ultrasound the next day the doctor told me that I was having a girl...so Jayd'n Scot was what it ended up being. The really strange thing is that she is almost three right now, and looks exactly like the little girl in my dream...
