Well, first of all, I suppose I should introduce myself.

My name is Jahnavi (born Jahnavi-devi Dasi). The name is Sanskrit, though none of my family is from or has ever been to India.

My husband (whose name is Konan, by the way - hooray for unnusual names!) and I have decided it's time to have a baby, and I'm so picky about names, I figure I need to start making a list as soon as possible. I've made numerous lists over the years, but there are only a few that have lasted through my changing tastes.

We've pretty much decided that our first boy (assuming we have one) will be named Alexander. We'd probably call him Xander because it's not quite as boring as Alex, but he'd have an alternative if he didn't like it.

Here are some of my other favorites:

Boy names:

Alexander
Gabriel

Girl names:

Sienna
Tourmaline (yes it's a rock, but I LIKE IT)

So yeah, not very many. Maybe I'll get some ideas here. :)

I love your boys' names. Sienna's okay, but I really don't like Tourmaline. To say the least, it's kind of a mouthful.

I like the boy names. I also like the name Sienna. Tourmaline I'm not sure about, but it might work depending on the last name and the family origin. Did you plan on having a nickname for Tourmaline?

Hmmm, love them all but as for Tourmaline, you got to remember that kids can be cruel and people are usually horrid and will never try to pronounce it right. I was always crazy for the name Andromeda because I'm obsessed with Greek myth but I'd have to admit I'd prolly let my kid slide by with Andi.

Alright, I love unusual names, but you might want to rethink Tourmaline. I'm sure I'm not the only person who will think of tourmaline ceramic straightening irons...you probably don't want your kid to be constantly associated with hair products.

I like the other names, but I'd have to agree about Tourmaline. Rock names aren't totally out, though. A less obscure rock might work- opal, for example.

I particularly love the name Gabriel. It's probably one of my favorite boy names.

But the versatility of Alexander is great, too!

Tourmaline!!! As a geologist, I have to say I think that is awesome. Tourmaline is one of the most versatile semi-precious gemstones out there, it comes in sooo many beautiful variations. I used to think of rock names for kids, but my fiance will never go for them. Like kyanite (a metamorphic mineral) for a boy, he could be called Ky.
