Is Liam a name by itself or a nickname for William? I like the name Liam (Lee-am, right?) but not so fond of William.

It's a name. I believe it's Irish. I'll look up the meaning...

Most meanings I've found so far refer to it as representative of "protection" or such.

It's a name, I've always read it as "Lee-um" though, I don't know if that's what you meant or not =x

I think it could be either. I know Liam is usually the Irish of William, but I could also see it for being a nickname for William.

I know a guy named Liam, not William. And have a friend who just named a baby Liam. I think it can stand alone just fine.
Although, I've always pronounced it Lee-um.

the only Liam I know is a William, named for his grandfather born in Ireland (a William who goes by Bill).

My 9 year old cousin is named Liam on its own. I like both Liam and William.

Liam is a name of its own, but it originated as a shorter form of William.

Both. I'm like you, I love "Liam", but not so much William.

Both

Thinking about it I know quite a few Williams, but none got by Liam. And all the Liams I know have that as a stand alone name.
I'm English, if that makes a diffrence.

I love Liam as a name all on it's own.

My son's middle name is Liam. Very few William's I know go by Liam, so I've always viewed them as separate names. I love it!

I like both, although I think I prefer Liam by itself.
