[identity profile] the-xarlster.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

... and not really planning on having a baby any time soon, but I have an obsession with names. For girls.

I have three categories that I like.
The first is jewels. I'd love to call my child either Amethyst Ruby or Amethyst Jade. Also, they can shorten it to Amy if they want. Incidentally, I love the name Ruby Tuesday, after the song.

The second is flowers. For me, the one that works is Lily Jasmine. Although, being myself, I would have to vary the spelling. Lilie or Jasmyn or something like that.

The last one is beautiful colours. Indigo and Azure do it for me- Indigo Azure, I think, or Azure Indigo are beautiful names. If you know any other poetic colours, please say.

So, really, comments. Yay or nay?

Where did they come up with Kenny?

I love the name Ruby, and the name Indigo. If Ruby Tuesday wasn't a chain restaurant I would totally name a child after the song, as well.

How about Emmy (like Emmy Rossum)? Or Jenny? Better than Kenny, anyway.
Interesting ideas. :)
I like Lily and Jasmine quite well.
I love Amethysts, and it doesn't sound too bad as a girl's name. :)
Colors...hmm...how about Sage, Magenta, Coral, Sienna (I like that one), Ivory, or Violet (a flower and a color)?

As to gemstone names, I once considered the name Lazuli, but in the end didn't like it. I've known two people named Beryl, one a woman and one a man. I had a friend whose father's name was Malachite. Jasper is a male gemstone name that I like, and I read once about a set of twins named Carnelian and Peridot. They were boys. A friend's mother briefly considered naming her son Turquoise, Turk for short, but went with the less eccentric Adam instead.

Flower names, I have some lists of because of an artist's community that uses them... Camellia, Celadine, Dahlia, Fern, Jacinda/Jacinta (aka Hyacinth), Laurel, Lilac (I've used this one, but not as a flower name - an abbreviation of a bird name; it's also a color), Marigold (I hate the way these smell), Poppy (which happens to be what my family calls my paternal grandfather), Saffron (I've used this, also a color), Tansy, Zinnia (I had a great-great-aunt named this).

Other pretty plant names, not sure which are flowers: Acacia (which is also a symbol of hidden love), Azalea, Basil (I think this would only work for certain males), Bramble (again, male), Camelai, Cedar, Cherise, Cypress, Eranthe, Ginger (also a color), Jessamine, Kalei, Leilani, Maple, Quince (probably male), Sage (androgynous, but I'm used to it as male; also a color), Shamrock (eccentric to the extreme, but fun!), Verbena (a lemony scent!), Yasmin (related to jasmine, I don't know), Yasminah (?), Zara.

Some color names I learned from a fashion industry hobby...
Rusee (dark bluish green)
Emeraude (clear emerald green)
Serpolet, Caspienne (yellowish stem greens)
Diogene (light rose with a purple cast)
Aubusson (delicate, pinkish shaded rose)
Sapharine (dark greenish blue)
Ciel (clear, pale sky or baby blue, no greenish tinge)
Ascanio (medium reddish purple)
Eveque (bishop's purple with a clear tint)
Roi (bright crimson)
Tangara (clear, dark cardinal red)
Ceres (kinda gold)
Palatine (clear medium gray)
Ivoire (a white word)

Other color names I like: Sienna, Cerise, Cerulean, Cyan, Sunglow (very hippie-esque, courtesy of Crayola).

Is "Kenna" better than "Kenny"?

Nay on the spelling changes. It'll just give the poor kid headaches.

Big nay on the Ruby Tuesday; what kid would want to be named after a diner chain?

Uh...you do realize that "Ruby Tuesday" is a Rolling Stones song?

So? A kid is more likely to associate it with the crappy diner down the street. It's a pretty big chain.
