[identity profile] shipinabathtub.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Ahh, I've just spotted this community and I love it already!

My name is Jaclyn Beth, and I do like it now (but only if my first name (which is pronounced the same as "Jacqueline") is kept whole or shorted into Jack.  I really do not like Jackie), but for years I didn't.  I was named after my father's close friend John Bernard who died shortly before I was born.  While my name is nice, I've been toying with the idea of changing my middle name to Elizabeth, because as my last name starts with a W, and then my initials would be "J.E.W." (and I am one, so I thought it would be kind of funny).  I don't think I'll actually do it though.  My dad would kill me.

Anyway, my favorite names are:

Girls:
Belle
Blythe
Clara
Claire
Dagny
Irene (my grandmother's name)
Valancy

.. and that's all I can think of right now!  I like more old-fashioned names with a twist. I think they're beautiful.

Boys:
Eric
David
James
Marc

Good old, fashioned names for boys I guess.

Nice names :) Claire is one that can have its annoying moments, and I think can say that as it's my name. You will always have people who forget the 'e' and after a while that gets annoying, especailly when it's people you've known for a while.

I'd argue with Jaclyn being pronounced the same as Jacqueline, or rather, Jacqueline being pronounced like Jaclyn. Your name clearly has two syllables and I'd be absolutely astonished if anyone put a third in. Mine usually has three syllables, in British English at least - it isn't jac-lin, it's jac-eh-lin*. American retail and airline staff have said it that way to me too, although no US-based friends would dare (I don't go by it!).

* Lucky me though, I got lumbered with 'zhah-cleen', my mother having a very strong French influence. Almost no one gets it right, including French speakers who tend to assume that non-French people wouldn't pronounce it that way...

I used to really dislike it. So many people spell it wrong, and since dropping the e makes it the male form of the name, it's not the most fun. I had teachers who knew me for at least 5 years and still forgot the e. Now I'm okay with it, but correcting people is still irksome.

Wait, what? Your name is pronounced Jaclyn according to you (and common sense, rules of spelling, etc). That's two syllables - jack, lin. People who put three in obviously can't read.

Mine is three syllables ('Ja-cel-lin' doesn't quite catch it but is close enough to make it obvious you understand the idea) in English, and pronounced completely differently in French. Neither pronunciation is the same as jack-lin.

I'm willing to bet that both of our names are pronounced the same way.
Did you not actually read what I wrote? Or what you wrote in reply?

Dagny FTW. I just love it because of Atlas Shrugged though, heh.

Ok, clarify this for me because you're really not making sense now. You said it's not ja-cel-lin, it's Jaclyn. How is that pronounced that isn't how it's spelled and isn't ja-cel-lin? Are you saying it's zha-cleen like mine? In which case that's not how 95% of the world pronounces 'Jacqueline', making your original assertion just as strange to me, and your original objection to my comment fairly nonsensical.

Why not be constructive and say 'it's not pronounced like SYLL-A-BLE, it's pronounced SYLL'BLE (or ZYLL'BLE)' when you reply instead of deleting comments and reposting without being any clearer about what you actually mean?

Haha wow, that's impressive... it took me a while to read but I'm usually a pretty fast reader. It is one of my favorites though.

Riiiiiiiight. That actually makes sense now (although I see why so many people might mispronounce your name, 'j-a-c-l-y-n' doesn't make the same sound in French as 'j-a-c-q-u-e-l-i-n-e', much less in English).

Why you couldn't just say 'actually mine's pronounced the French way too' in your original reply is beyond me. Lucky me though, I got lumbered with 'zhah-cleen', my mother having a very strong French influence. Almost no one gets it right, including French speakers who tend to assume that non-French people wouldn't pronounce it that way... is phrased fairly easily for a 'me too' response, no?
