What do you think of the name Maverick?

While doing errands the other day I saw a little boy with this name. What good nicknames are there besides Rick/Ricky. Would Richard go with as a MN?

How about Bret Maverick? ;-)

I think it's okay. I can't get away from the James Garner/Mel Gibson western thing, though. I love the old show and the 90s film, but it's a really strong image.

I love the name...i'm actually trying to force it on my husband for the baby i'm having due in september but he can't shake the "Top Gun" association...

I think it would be weird with Richard as the MN b/c then both names have some of the same NNs.

Ditto...I look at it and I think "Top Gun."

My friend named her son that (maybe you met him at the store, ha ha). He goes by Mav for a nickname. I used to think of whatever movie that was with the guy Maverick but it's been awhile (and the movie didn't stick with me) so I think it could go OK. You could also do Rick for a nickname if you wanted something more normal.

My husband is trying to convince me to name a kid that, but I can't shake the Top Gun thing. Other than that, I actually like it. A little out there, but everyone can spell it :)

If you were going to call him Rick, then I wouldn't choose Richard as a middle name, seeing as its nickname is also Rick.

I'd probably call him Mavy for short, you know, like the jeans. [Maw-vee]
