Hello,

I am currently ttc (through IVF), and I am having a hard time deciding between two names. I already have boys names picked out-- James Christopher and Jacob Thomas. If I have a daughter I love the nickname Maggie..but I want to name her Margret/Margaret. That is my problem. I don't know which one to choose from. "Margret" seems phonetically correct, which I like, but "Margaret" is more common, and looks "prettier."

I hope this doesn't sound silly but the name "Margaret" reminds me of a Margarita, and I think of a Spanish dancer with too much makeup, and bright coloured nails! The bad part is Margret looks more plain, and I know this is probably goofy, but when I go to places and look at the name keychains or the cups (from disney-seaworld) with names on them, you only see "Margaret."

So I guess my question is this....which name do you like better, "Margret" or "Margaret"

And also, do you pronounce the names any differently? I think when I say the names I pronounce the "ga" in Mar-ga-ret. Is that right?

Since there is a good possibility of twins (due to IVF) I'm also at a lost cause for another girl name. I was thinking I would stick with another "M" name, but something not too unusual since "margret/margaret" is more of a traditional name.

Any help is *greatly* appreciated!

i would say margaret..but you could also try margrette. that's more unique, but won't get mispronounced. :)

I like Margaret...

I have an Aunt Margaret, my grandparents named her margaret with the intentions of calling her Maggie... it never stuck...

I like Jacob Thomas more, but James Christopher is also very nice.

I would vote Margaret, and I think it all depends on the person pronouncing it. I don't think the extra syllable gets added in on most occasions. I think the traditional spelling is better with regard to the common souvenier issue, and people naturally spelling it the traditional way.

I'm lost for other "M" names that are on the same level as Margaret or even Maggie. Madeline perhaps?

I'd go with Margaret. It's the more common spelling, and I think people say it like "Margret" anyway.

I much prefer Margaret. And plus it's the widely accepted spelling so I would think spelling it Margret would just lead into her constantly having to spell out her name. Just my opinion of course. Oh and I like the nn Maggie, so cute.

I love Jacob Thomas! Jacob is one of my guilty pleasure names. I hate how popular it's become but I still love it anyway.

margaret, definately. i pronounce it marg-ar-et, like you said, and i actually really like it that way, more so than marg-ret.

I like Margaret. I totally understand about the names on keychains. My name is spelled Jackeline nickname Jacky and neither of those are found anywhere on any keychain that isn't specially ordered. It get's frustrating but at the same time I like the uniqueness of my spelling.

If you have twins you could name the other one Margo.....or other different spellings of it. Or Magaline, Malena or something like that. Just throwing out some ideas.

I also LOVE Jacob. I don't care for how popular it is either, but it is adorable! I had a really hard time with coming up with a middle name...most middle names do not go well with Jacob.

Wow, I'm glad to get the opinion of someone who knows about the "finding your name" problem. My name is so plain, "lisa" but I never have a problem with keychains and nicknacks etc.

Thanks you for the good luck, I certainly need lots of that right now. I never imagines IVF would be so emotionally exhausting!!!

sorry this post is so late. i'm just milling around the community and just read this.

i was going to suggest madeline (since that's what i'm probably naming mine if it's a girl), and i have a cousin named margaret whose nickname is maggie. one thing to think about with those is that a nickname for madeline is madi, or maddy, so you could have a maggie and a maddy.
