I prefer -ie endings for girls, but this is my #1 most hated name, so no spelling, lol.

Emilie should be pronounced like Emilia.

I know a little 12 yr named Emilie. Apparently Emilie is the german form of Amelia, her mother's name (they were both named after a German relative named Emilie)

It's not that Americans are lazier, English is not a romance language like Italian is, so we don't follow the same strict vowel phonetics that Italian does.

I hate the name Emily, so I don't really like Emilie either but I'd go with Emilie just because it looks different from Emily, and Emily is the plainest most boring name I can think of (along with Emma... dullsville) so Emilie looks a bit more dressed up.

I know someone naming their baby Emma Lee - and are going to call her that as a first name. How about Emmilee?

I like the original spelling of Emily, but whichever you like is what will be right.

Emily for sure! I HATE when names are spelled wrong to try and be unique.

Emmilee is just awful! yuck

And I feel sorry for Emma Lee.

Emilie is not spelled wrong though - I believe it's used in Italian (?) and German (possibly other languages as well), and Émilie is also the French spelling.

I completely agree with this

I don't like the name Emilie, it just looks odd

Also, in French it would be pronounced em-uh-lee as well.

Considering how popular Emily is, I think it'd be pretty atrocious and stupid to spell it any other way.

Oh and yes I do know that Emilie is legit in other languages but in the US? I maintain that it'd be totally silly.

How about Emmaline? I love that name. Oh, and from what I read Emily is the #1 US baby name this year, so its going to be waaay common

I believe that Emilie is originally German (I could be wrong)... in which case the pronuciation like Emilia is the only correct pronunciation. People (not necessarily just Americans) are often lazy and don't check into what they are naming their child or how to say it.

My name ends in je. Let's pretend my name is Roosje. It's not pronounced Roohs-gee or any other mutilation of the name just because I live in America. (Roosje is Dutch and pronounced Rohss-yeh).

So regardless of language rules, names do come from different areas and are not pronounced correctly if assumed to be like someone's native tongue who is not from the same country.

It is spelt wrong if you are saying it the same way as Emily.

Just because Emilie is pronounced differently in other languages doesn't mean that it can't be a rare variant spelling of Emily in English. But I did vote Emily.

I don't agree. If names can be whatever you want them to be, names are no longer names at that point. I believe there are names and things that are not names even if they are being used as such.

I by no means think that names can be whatever you want them to be... but I think Emilie can be pronounced as Emily, since Emily is a name in the English language that everybody knows, and "lie" and "ly" endings on ENGLISH names are pronounced the same. So if somebody picks the name Emily and decides to misspell it, it doesn't actually transform it into a German name...
This is not the same thing as calling someone Rybykyh and insisting that it is pronounced Rebecca.

It's a German name, regardless, and many other languages say it that way too. The child would be called the wrong name half the time from people seeing only text.

I never said it was the same as the y trend.

Ok sorry I used that analogy, I misunderstood. Anyway, now I do see where you are coming from and generally agree with the idea that you are expressing. But I think that in this case it is possible that Emilie may happen to be a legitimate variant spelling of Emily in English, which is why I think it doesn't need to be pronounced the German way. I'm not sure if it is an accepted variant, but that's how I view the name when an English speaker uses it that way anyway.
