this sucks. I found out a few days ago the Sebastian is on the top 100 boys list for names......as much as I love the name it really friggin kills me knowing that. Someone in pregnant posted like 3 days ago that they named their wee one seb. so now I am totally confused as to what I wanna do. be like eff everyone imma still do it or change my mind. I am loving the names Israel and Judah for first names. I like Sullivan for a MN since we can call him sully as a NN and I sorta love that. My husband loves Padric but I do not want people calling my child paddy. help me people. look at my baby names tag and help me. I am open to any suggestions, they don't have to be on the list. My first son is Morgan Malachy Alastair Carroll and we want 2 middle names for this little guy as well.

Alaric-noble ruler
August-revered and exalted
Archimedes-mathematician
Castor-to shine
Deacon-servant
Elisha-God is salvation
Elliot-my God is YAHWEH
Miles-merciful
Oliver-elf army
Sullivan-little dark eye
Theodore-gift of God

combos so far
Elisha Theodore Archimedes Carroll
Miles Oliver Archimedes Carroll
Sullivan August Archimedes Carroll

I actually like Miles Sullivan ______ Carroll.

I'm not a fan of double middle names, so it's hard for me to think of a 2nd one that sounds good to my ears. :]

Oh! Theodore Miles Sullivan Carroll sounds nice to me, too!

I like Miles a lot, but I've always thought it meant 'soldier'. Merciful is a much nicer meaning, I like it even more now.
Elisha sounds like a female name to me, even if it isn't.

I think Miles Oliver Sullivan sounds great, or Oliver Miles. Also Miles Elliot or Miles Sullivan.

I vote for Miles Oliver Archimedes Carroll. I love the way it sounds and the meanings are great. I'm a huge fan of 2 middle names (my sister, niece, future daughter and me all have 2 middle names) and it's great to see more people doing so as well :)

Oliver Deacon Sullivan.

But if you love Sebastian, go for it. As you get past the top 30 in boys names, their frequency goes down SIGNIFICANTLY.

I just wanted to throw out the fact that CASTOR is 'beaver' in french too.

Hm, perhaps this is a little farfetched, but instead of the nickname "Paddy" for Padraic, what about working off of the end of the name visually and calling him Drake?

The thing that worries me more is that it's not too far a leap, for the creative taunter, from Castor to castrate.

I had Sullivan on my boys list for a long time, with the nickname Van. I still love it. Here are some combos to consider:

Sullivan Miles Alaric
Sullivan Elliot Miles

I really like Sullivan as the first name, Sullivan Carroll just sounds like a really strong name to me. :)

I know the ending isn't actually pronounced "Drake" - that's why I said that you'd have to work with it visually (rather than aurally) to pull out that nickname!

Is Padraic pronounced just like Patrick where you are? I've actually only ever heard it said like this, on this Irish names site (http://www.babynamesofireland.com/pages/boy-names-o-z.html). It sounds like there may be some variation even in Ireland, though.

P.S. Sorry, I just re-read what I wrote and wanted to say that I hope it doesn't sound like I am trying to give you a hard time! I think you are doing a fine job with your naming choices.

I don't like any of your names besides Elliot and Castor is the worst (maybe tied with Archimedes).

And I'm surprised Sebastian is a top 100. I think it's awful.

of those choices, how bout...

Miles Elliot Sullivan
Miles Oliver Deacon
Miles August Sullivan
Elliot Miles Deacon
Elliot Miles Oliver
August Miles Oliver
August Oliver Sullivan

I don't personally care for Archimedes, Castor or Theodore so I'm having a hard time putting them with the other names and I like Alaric but am having a hard time with that fitting in syllable-wise for some reason.

and it also occured to me that when Sullivan is put as the second middle name it almost makes it sound like "Sullivan-Carroll" is his double last name instead. (a little bit with Deacon too). I don't know if that bothers you or not.

overall, I think you have good solid choices. and I really like Sebastian too and I feel like it's one of those classic names that even were it to get a bit more popular, it's not trendy popular like Jacob or Aidan where it's like so, Teh Name to use.

good luck. and since I saw you say that you were due Dec 1 I hope you get to meet "what's-his-name" soon. ;p

It definitely means soldier in Latin. I did Latin for four years, and we had to translate LOTS of texts by Caesar, amongst others. Every single one of them was about the military. I became very familiar with words like "miles".

Ooh, latin! Yeah, I don't like the meaning 'soldier' much, but I guess there are worse things out there, haha.

In my opinion, NOT choosing a name because it's popular is as silly as choosing a name solely for it's popularity!

My husband was born Padraic and changed it to Patrick the first chance he got, but I think people are better about respecting Celtic spellings now than they were when he was a kid. Also, apparently technically you're supposed to say it Powrick, though his parents didn't. But he's never been called Paddy -- usually it's Pat, if anything. (Which bugs him, because he thinks Pat sounds like a middle-aged woman, but that's him.)

Of the names on your list, I like August, Deacon, Elliot, Miles and Theodore. Not a fan of Castor, Elisha or Archimedes.

I like:
Elliot, Miles, Oliver, Sullivan, Theodore

I've really, really liked Sullivan for a long time. I would use it, but there are quite a few businesses in our area that are named Sullivan something-or-another. I don't know, that sort of turned me off.

I am sort of in the same boat as you- wanting a name that is not super popular, but finding my favorites creeping up in popularity.

Good luck!
