We are expecting our second child in August, a little girl. We have a son, Ian Thomas.

Recently my husband has said he likes the name Lilith. The more I think about it, the more I like it. It has an interesting history though.

My question is, When you hear the name Lilith do you think of:

Pretty name/feminist and independent

OR

Evil history/baby eating demon

OR

It's just an ugly name, I don't like it

In Jewish tradition Lilith was Adams first wife, who was made from the dust like him. She demanded to be his equal, and when he wouldn't let her, she flew away. She was made a demon as punishment. We aren't religious, so this doesn't bother us personally, but we don't want to saddle a baby with a name that most people will think is obscene.

Pretty and independent. It actually makes me think of the shows "Cheers" and "Frasier," and the characted on them by that name. I think it's really pretty though. I also like Lillian/Lilian/Lily.

I didn't even know that biblical story...but then again, I'm Catholic, not Jewish.
I like the name, I think it is very pretty, and I don't think that many people will have those certain associations that you are worried about.

I'm pagan and feminist, therefore have no issues with the name. She was pretty cool really.

Don't think many people are that aware of the story, so it shouldn't be that big a deal.

The name itself is very pretty, Lily would of course be a sweet nickname for little girl. Then the full name for a more sassy teenager/woman.

I think it might offend some people... I mean, if you're not picking it FOR the meaning, maybe pick a different name, so you don't rub certain people the wrong way. or use it as a middle name.

I think it's pretty. Damien is often associated with the Devil and it hasn't stopped people using it!

I agree! Frazier/Cheers is what I thought of when I heard it, and while I don't think that particular actess is pretty, she was very independent, and when I think of Lily I think they must be beautiful ;)

Oh and what a poster said about it might rub people the wrong way- ignore it- there are plenty of people who "rub" people the wrong way with names they choose or were given, there is no way to please EVERYONE so as long as you and your family love it- go for it :D

Good Luck!!!

right off the bat when I hear the name Lilith I think of beauty and fairies. :) I love that name a lot. I think of it as definetly a pretty name/feminist and independent.

does he like lily, also? if so she could be lilith and called lily or lilith could be a middle name.

but, i don't think it's ugly at all.

I think Lilith is very mysterious and beautiful. I've only seen a bad definition for the name once, but for the most part it seems to mean "Queen of the night". If you guys like Lilith but aren't too fond of the meaning you can always go with Lillian or Lily. My personal favorite is Lilias. It doesn't seem popular and you can always use the nickname Lily.

I LOVE it. Yes, I think of the Jewish legend, and also the character on Cheers, but it's very strong, yet pretty.

Ditto...I thought of Frasier. Not 100% sure if I like it...although I don't think many people will think it to be "obscene" because I don't think that story is a commonly known one...but I am just assuming...I could be wrong.
