So, people I know are naming their baby girl Rori. I HATE IT!

WDYT?

I like it. I would prefer it on a boy, though.

Is it short for Aurora? I think it's cute.

I think it could be a great nickname for a girls name like Aurora, but not a good given name for a girl.
It sounds more masculine to me and means "red king".

I usually prefer i's or ie's at the ends of girls' names, but I prefer Rory.

I like it.

(And I dislike Aurora - which makes me think of a woman who would write romance novels. So I think it is good that they are opting simply for Rori. I've known a Tori and a Lori and I find this to be a similar cute and slightly tomboyish name.)

I am planning on naming my son Rory (should I have one). What is it with people giving girls names meant for boys? Do they know it means Red King?

Rory is an Irish male name. "Rori" as a "girl's name" has been invented just so people feel they can continue a trend of giving girls male names. To me, it's like naming your daughter John or something. :/

Is it the full name or a nickname, as a nickname I like it (but prefer Rory...and yes, I know that is technically a boys name, I happen to like boy nicknames for girls) but as a full name I do not.

Yikes. It's awful. I guess it'd be okay as a nn, but it's just so masculine sounding. It's just not pleasant sounding at ALL.

I am totally confused as to why people would think Rory/Rori sounds good on a girl. It's so masculine sounding. But hey if people don't care that Ryan means Little King, I doubt they care what Rory means. Siiiigh. It would be nice on a boy :)

Rory does not mean that, no matter how you spell it. I used to live Ireland. I never met any female Roris, but you could use it as a feminine version--but it still means Red King as it comes fom the old Irish for red-headed king. You can't change what it means in Irish by changing a letter. I'm not jumping on you, I know it's not you naming your kid this. :) I just love this name and the meaning behind it. I want to name my son this but find it too masculine for a daughter.

But that brings up the question do names morph and change meaning? Yes. So I suppose Rori will be considered a completely different name. I just don't want people to think I gave my son a girl's name in 25 years. *LOL*

I think people feel anything that ends in an "e" sound is feminine. That doesn't explain Ryan. And why is it okay to name a girl Ryan but not Brian?

I'm going to name my son Robert Cory and call him Rory for short. Let's take it back!

I think it's nice.
But terrible if the child pronounces their Rs as Ws.
Wowee.

I probably only like it because of the character on Gilmore Girls, though.

I'm with you!

I thought, why not just name him Rory? Then I thought, Rory Cory. :)

Yeah, I get that now. :)

I am still going with just plain Rory but with a Scandinavian middle name.
