I have loved the name Elijah for a very long time and it has recently become very tainted.. which I'm not too happy about, but nevertheless the name is tainted and I'm just not sure I could ever name my child that now. I know it may sound silly, but I'm sure there are some of you who completely understand this.

Anyway, I would still love to name my child something similar. We had planned to call Elijah "Eli" for short and I have recently become attached to just Eli. (I like Elias, husband doesnt, so it's out)

Here's the point:

1.) Is Eli "name" enough to stand on its own? (ETA Eli is Jewish/English/Biblical and means "ascension")
2.) Eli Malachi sounds horrible, so what other middle names might you suggest?
3.) Opinions on these:

Eli Adam
Eli Aaron
Eli Isaac

Personally, no dont think it's a big enough name to stand on its own because it sounds very nicknamey to me. I'm a big one for names with nicknames you love as much as the long versions though.

It makes me very happy that someone else likes Eli Adam. Adam is my brothers name and I REALLY want to use his name as a mn for my IF son. I liked Elijah Adam, but wasnt sure I was completely sold on Eli Adam but someone else liking it boosts it, definitely! =) You just made my day!

My friend's full name is Eli David and it fits him well. He doesn't seem like an Elijah to me.

I like all three of those names, but when said together, they sound kind of awkward, I think because of the vowel sounds at the end and the beginning? Eli Adam isn't as bad, but I like Aaron and Isaac better ;).

I don't know if you're trying to use JUST Hebrew names, but here are some others I thought worked well together:

PS - I totally love the name Elijah/Eli, too. And that totally sucks that you like it but you can't use it anymore.

Elias is ADORABLE and another that would give you the Eli nn is Elisha. I don't particularly like it, but I know a lot of people who do.

I really like Elias, too, but my husband just doesnt at all, and I suppose I should let him have an opinion occasionally *grin* I like Elisha, but with all the female variations of Alicia (Alisha, Elisha prn like Alisha) these days, Elisha is quite liable to be mistaken for female and mispronounced.

I'm hoping that maybe by the time we decide to have kids the "object of taint-dom" will be so far removed that Elijah has had time to get back in my good graces again=)

There's actually three people on my friends list with sons named Eli, all born within the last two years. Two are actually named Elliot/Eliot. One is just Eli. Oh, there's another newborn Eliot too. And I have two friends in real life with sons named Elijah. I like the name Eli a lot, but would hesitate to use it myself these days for that reason.

Elijah is nmsaa. I'm not of a traditionally religious background though, so most of the bible names aren't my thing. I do like Elias a little more, and especially like Elliot.

Eli Adam and Eli Aaron are ok. Eli Isaac is very awkward with two I sound in a row like that - it's like a stutter. Ideally, I think the mn should not start with a vowel sound. It's hard to have two 'open-mouth' sounds in a row.

I like Eli by itself. I would probably find a middle name that started with a consonant though. Going vowel to vowel sounds awkward to me. But it's not like most people are going to call him by his full name, so it doesn't matter THAT much.

Oh it's not just over all tainted, it's just tainted to ME... ya know the whole person association and then because of that person you cant use the name.. it's a situation similar to that. It's someone who's very recently entered my life and just sends chills down my spine every single time I see him... it's left the name in a very bad place for me. Like I said in a reply before, I'm hoping that I'm very far removed from the association by the time I have children and the name bounces back to the top of my list.. but right now I just couldn't use it.

I love the name Elijah... I wish my husband wouldn't have nixed it! :D But I also like Eli and I think that it can stand on its own. I think, though, that the middle name needs to be a tad bit longer then. I really like Elijah Malachi even though that's not the question at hand. ;)

Thank you so much for explaining that! I thought I might have missed something in the media about someone named Elijah that did something Awful. Still, sorry to hear it's become tainted for you. I have a few names like that, too- ones with personal references that I would not want to give my child. Blessings!

I'm wondering why you feel that the name Elijah has been tainted? I named one of my sons Elijah. I never liked "Eli" for short though and he at the age of 3 doesn't like when people call him Eli either. He and everyone else calls him "Lijy", or "Lijah" or "Lijah-bear" as "nick names" but I mostly just call him by his name. :) And I love the name.
