a fellow student has a teenage son named Tolkien.

Ouch. I love fandom as much as the next person and really debated naming our daughter Manderley. That's the name of the house in the classic book Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Even if its more obscure than Tolkien, people are mean and you don't need to give your kid a built in way for them to be ridiculed. Needless to say she got a traditional name and I am saving that for a pet.

I kind of love it in every way shape and form.

You shouldn't let the world dictate what you want to name your child. That sounds like a unique beautiful name and I would never have known where it came from. Now a pet has it :/

Its not bad... but while it does have some amazing associations its a bit much considering there are hundreds of characters in his books.

I know parents who called their son Rohan after seeing the second movie.

My name is Lorien and it was nice when the movies came out and for 5 minutes people recognized where my name was from and that it wasn't a weird spelling of Lauren. I don't like Tolkien as a first name, though.
