[identity profile] thegreylioness.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I'm revisiting my name book because Husband and I can't agree on a name yet (we still have 2 months), but we are having our third boy (Colton and Joshua (JD) are our first two). We had perhaps compromised on Parker out of a 3 name list that we had narrowed down to (Parker, Harrison Austin), but then we watched The Hobbit and I fell in love with Thorin.

He's not in love with it, like I am, and I don't want to give the idea of it up, but it's definitely pushed Parker out, I really hate the fact that Parker's meaning is Park Keeper. We already of Colton which means, from Coal Town...

Here's my remade list, since we are starting over. My husband won't really bring names up, and I've stopped talking to him about it until the baby is born, hoping he'll just know that I love Thorin and settle on it. HAha.

Thorin (bold, daring one)
Jude (Praised)
Harrison (Not in love with the meaning.. Son of Harry)
Roman (Citizen of Rome- another I am not in love with the meaning)
Nathaniel (Gift of God)
Jace (the lord is salvation)
Xavier (Bright)
Parker (Park keeper)
Charles (Free Man)
Matthew (Gift of God)
James (Supplanter)
Alexander (defending men)
William (Resolute Protector)
Augustus (Great, Magnificent)

Our last name is Gray. We don't have a middle name picked out (though I prefer James or Alexander if Thorin was chosen as the first name). I may have to settle on Thorin as a middle name, if so, which is the best sounding first name? Or are you of the opinion that middle names and first names don't really need to sound good together?

I think that Augustus Thorin Gray sounds the best overall. I think that first and middle names should sound at least a little good together. Like, Harrison and Thorin would be really bad together.

I like Charles Thorin best of the names you have listed.

Of the names you've listed, I like Charles Thorin, James Thorin, or Augustus Thorin. I like Harrison and Parker best with your other sons' names though.

I do think the entire name should flow nicely.

My favorite sounding combinations are:

Xavier Thorin Gray
Parker Thorin Gray
Alexander Thorin Gray
Augustus Thorin Gray

To me all of those sound really good!

I don't like Matthew Thorin because of the TH - TH sound, and agree about the n endings of Harrison, Roman, and even Nathan(iel) clashing a little with the Thorin.

We also have a very short last name (rhymes with yours!) and I like longer names to balance it out, so Jace, James, Jude and Charles are off my list for sounding too short. But that might just be me being weird. Our sons both have 2-syllable names that start and end with consonants because those sounded strongest to me at the time to balance the short last name.

I love your choices!

Name meanings obviously matter to you (which is fine!) I wouldn't go Thorin as a first name, I'd use in the middle and I might be tempted to use Thor instead.

My favorite from your list is Alexander. It goes with the names of your other two boys well and has so many nickname possibilities (Al, Alex, Xan, Xander etc.) In terms of meaning I like Nathaniel and Matthew best but because they are both biblical and so is Joshua I don't think they go as well with Colton as a set.

I feel like if you went with Thorin, it would be a "one of these things is not like the other". I like Jude, and Harrison!

I like James Thorin or Alexander Thorin. James Thorin is probably my favorite, but you WILL accidentally call Joshua James and vice versa. Matthew Thorin is also really cute. Nathaniel is one of my favorite names, but Nathaniel Thorin is kind of a mouthful - Nathaniel Jude or Nathaniel James works, though.
