LOL, that's basically where I'm at with it. I think they're pretty to look at and pretty to say once you actually KNOW how to pronounce them, but how they get THAT pronunciation out of THAT spelling, I may never understand.
This...I had to look them both up and they sound nice but I feel bad for any English speaking teachers who are going to have to figure out the pronunciation
My only knowledge of how to pronounce Irish names is that 'bh' makes a 'v' sound and if something ends it in an 'e' it probably is an 'a' sound of some description. Otherwise, I just feel as though they add about forty more letters to each word than is necessary by English standards.
There is a woman at my company named Siobhan (I think its Shi-von). Its really pretty when you learn to say it. I would have never guessed the pronunciation on Aoibhin.
I love Irish names and think they're absolutely gorgeous on the whole. But, like everyone said, I wouldn't want my son/daughter continuously needing to spell their names for people. I have to do that enough as is, and my name is Caitlin, LOL.
My mother worked with a little girl called Aoibhlinn ("Eh-va-lynn"). I love it. She thought both myself and the parents were crazy. Then my cousin gave her daughter the middle name Siobhan (Shu-von) and I was furious because as someone who works in child care there are only so many names that don't end up getting associated with children I work with PLUS I actually like. I also worked with a lady named Aiofe ("Eh-Fa"). Personally I like the style but having no family history of that I'd feel almost guilty using them (not sure if that's the right word, just the closest I've got)
Irish names are awesome. At first you're like "How the heck do you pronounce THAT?" and then you learn the pronunciation and they end up sounding sooo pretty!
