There is this girl that came to my work named Delphi, as in the Oracle of Delphi [Del-phee]. What are your opinions?

I don't like it on its own, but it could make a nice nickname for Delphine, which I love. (I have this weird obsession with French names, particularly aquatic-themed ones, Oceane, Delphine, and I've NO IDEA WHY.)

(even though Delphine isn't aquatic-themed at all. That sentence turned out more random than I thought. I wanted to say it'd make a good nickname for Delphine, and that I love French names like Delphine, especially if they're aquatic-themed, like Oceane. HA! There.)

I've always heard Delphi pronounced dell-fye.

Delphine totally is, though! It's the feminine form of "dauphin," dolphin!

Really? Isn't it a form of Delphina?

Whatever. I'm so baffled by my own self. This is why I shouldn't be allowed to name my kids Oceane and Delphine, I'd offend anyone who can speak French.

If Delphine is from dolphin I'd be SO HAPPY though. I could have three daughters, and name them Oceane, Delphine and Marine. And they'd probably grow up to be terrified-of-water, non-French-speaking, HATING-ME-for-giving-them-themed-names children.

That's how I would pronounce it. And I like it better that way too.

I much prefer Delphine/Delphina.

Delphine is the mn for current girl name pick. I like Delphi as a nn, but not as a given name.

Delphine and Delphina are both derived from the Latin "delphinus," "dolphin," so your marine-theme is TOTALLY SET! And may well make your kids hate water. But honestly, at least with Delphine, it's subtle enough to where no one might really notice. Oceane and Marine might be a bit much, though!

when I was little I had friends, twins, named Oceane (oh-SAY-ahn, she said it) and Delphine. And I fell in love with the names. =D
