We've decided our daughter's middle name will be Vera. Aubrey Vera. It was one of my favorites and when I told my partner he mentioned that it was his grandmother's middle name too. I realized that I don't like it pronounced Veer-a as much as I like Vair-ah. Does it matter that much since it will be her middle name?

How do you pronounce Vera?

I pronounce it like Veer-uh. I believe that it the common known pronunciation but maybe everyone else will think otherwise?

I've always said Vair-ah, never realized it could be pronounced another way!

I've only heard in pronounced Vee-ra.

Though now that I think about it, when I've heard it in the context of aloe vera, it's often vair-uh. Hmm.

Anyway, I am of the belief that middle names are pretty insignificant in general. You could want it pronounced Vuh-RAY or something and it wouldn't matter, since middle names are rarely used or even known by anyone except the person whose middle name it is.

Aubrey Vera is vey nice, btw.

I've always pronounced aloe vera like "veer-uh." Maybe it's a location thing?

I feel like I've heard it as "vair-uh" in TV commercials, but I am not 100% sure. I definitely say vee-ruh, myself.

I've heard it said both ways. VEER-ah sounds a little more assertive and VARE-ah sounds a little more gentle, in my opinion.

With Aubrey I think it sounds a bit better as VARE-ah. Better vowel variety.

I've always heard it pronounced VEER-uh. I've never considered VARE-uh before, but I have to say, I like it a lot better than the other pronunciation! Since it's her middle name, I'd say it doesn't matter much, most people will never know it anyway. Like any other name with multiple pronunciations, f it comes up and someone says it the other way, she can correct them and they can move on.

I don't think it matters much, since most people won't hear it. Basically, the only time people will know what her middle name is is when they're being told, so they'll hear how it's pronounced.

That being said, I pronounce it Veer-a.

I've always said Vair-uh. However, I've only known two Veras in real life, and both pronounced their names Veer-uh.

veer-uh.

for me, difference in pronunciation for a middle name would only matter if i planned on calling the person by both names - if i planned to use mostly the first name alone/a nickname, i wouldn't worry about the middle name so much.

I've always pronounced it Veer-ah but now that I read Vair-ah - I really love it! Funny how a different pronunciation can make such a big difference. Would you ever consider the spelling Vaira? Regardless, I think Aubrey Vera Is beautiful name!
