What do you think of the name Ely said Ee-lee like the city in Minnesota?

Hmm, it kind of reminds me of the fish (is it a fish? Water creature, at any rate) eel, which, you know... I guess that's not a bad thing and I'm personally neutral about them myself, but that's just what springs to mind when I hear the name.

And I'm Australian so I don't know anything about the cities of Minnesota.

There's one in Minnesota? I guess I'm less surprised by it being in Minnesota than by the fact that they retained the original pronunciation. Most Old World names taken to US cities seem to get mutated somewhere along the line.

Anyway. Ely. Nice cathedral. Lovely scenery. Not my idea of a person's name, sorry.

It would get pronounced wrong every single time. I see ee-LIE.

I think it sounds pretty neat, although I'm not sure if I'd use it. I'm from Minnesota and I no longer live there, so I like the idea of a name with a Minnesota connection.

Interesting, but I definitely don't like it.

Well, we've move from youneek spellings to eunuch pronunciation. I love eee-lie, I *hate* your pronunciation.

Looks too short, like it's a nickname instead of a full name. Pronunciation would be all over the map. And I can only think of the cathedral town. :/

Ely is a small town in Nevada, too. About 200 miles out of Las Vegas. We pronouce it Ee-lee.
