Is Dolly an acceptable nn for Isolde? I really wouldn't want her to become an Izzy...

I think that Dolly is traditionally a nickname for Dorothy. Personally I think it's a bit of a reach for Isolde. Also, I think parents should always be prepared for kids (and their friends!) to use any natural nickname from a name, and if you really HATE a nickname, it's probably best to skip it. (There are some parents... a former friend among them... that actually actively inculcate in the kid that the hated nickname is awful and terrible and no good, but personally again, I think that's almost disturbing... eg "Your name is James. James and ONLY James. Don't EVER let anyone call you Jim! Jim is awful!" What happens when your James-and-only-James meets a kid who actually does go by Jim... no filter four year old saying "Your name is awful"? Probably!)

Anyway, back from that sideline, Sol could be kind of funky (since it means "sun" in Spanish).

You could name a child Isolde and call her Dolly, but I don't see Dolly as a nickname for Isolde. In other words, you can name her Isolde and call her Poppy, Angelika, Eleanor, Lulu, etc.

That said, if you don't want her to become an Izzy, don't name her Isolde, name her Dolly.

Yep, if there is a nickname for a name kids will use it. My mom wanted me to be called Jessica, but I've been Jess, Jessie, Jay, Jessa, and even Jecca. If you hate a nickname it's best to pass on the name.
