[identity profile] renishas.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband and I are expecting our second child. Next week we find out the sex of the baby but people are already asking if we have names picked out. Last time I had a baby i told people names we were thinking of and then I got to hear their opinions about names I loved. I'm not doing that this time. So I've decided to use decoy names. If we have a boy I'm going to tell people we're thinking of Castiel, Crowley, or Thor. I'm having a harder time picking out girls names that are from geeky pop culture that aren't actual options for a name. So far all I have is Angua (Terry Pratchett).

So spam me with your favorite decoy names and where they're from. Bonus points if you actually know a child with that name.

Renesmee. And look them dead in the eye, and say it with a straight face! ;)

The only other decoy name I knew about was parents that called the bump "Slurpee." Which actually creeped me out a bit.

In the same vein as the last two, Martha, Donna, Romana, Nyssa, Tegan, Peri, and Ace. Maybe even Rani?

I knew people who used the decoy of Gladys, and a friend now due in december who is calling the baby Alfie for now.

We just went with names that went terrible with our last name, like too many repeating sounds.

Came to suggest Galadriel, Arwen, Hermione and Katniss, but I see that I've been beaten to the punch :)

If you want to get into anime and video games, there's Integra, Seras, Lenalee, Nunally, Euphemia, Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and many more that I can't remember right now. There's also Buffy and Willow, and Bellatrix, and if you start with Disney, there's Ariel and Esmeralda and Aurora and Giselle. Then there's Broadway - Elphaba, Glinda, Nessarose, Fantine, Eponine, Cosette, etc.

But then when you have your baby and don't use the decoy names, won't people who said horrible things think that you changed your mind because of them? And then they might think it's ok to keep doing it to people! What about really plain names that people won't have much to say about? I sympathise though, it's annoying having people ask all the time like they have some kind of entitlement! I told people we'd chosen 'boy baby' and 'girl baby' for names, just to be annoying back to them! And we got nothing but positive comments on her name when she was born :)

I'd be a jerk about it if someone was rude about my name choices.

:What am I thinking of for names? You don't get to know because last time you were a poop-head about it!" *stomps off dramatically*

A friend of mine just had her son and didn't tell anyone but me about the baby's potential names to avoid jerk comments (not even her sisters or her mom). She was between two Henry and Damon but my phone kept changing Henry to Hernandez so we called him Baby Hernandez whenever someone asked. It was silly enough that no one took it seriously but it gave people something to say. In the end she did choose to go with Damon and it suits him perfectly but we still joke about Hernandez sometimes :)

We told everyone who was nosing around that we were expecting either little Zebulon Yul or Zebulina Yul. It was fun.

I make up decoy name ideas sometimes, and I'm not even pregnant! I like to make first+middle combos that either both have a tie to the same fandom or make a fandom nickname. Most of them are for boys for some reason... My favorite is Leonardo Benjamin with the nickname Leoben (Battlestar: Galactica), but you're looking for a girl's name so...

Ooh, ooh! One more boys' name because I just thought of it: Badger. "You know, like the character from Firefly AND the Hufflepuff mascot!"

Inara Serra / Inara Sarah (Firefly/Serenity)
Serenity (Firefly/Serenity)
Lois Lane (Superman)

Okay, I'm stuck too.

My only fear with decoy names is that someone might buy/make something with the wrong name on it!

Minerva [Harry Potter]
Edna [E. Mode from The Incredibles]

Sounds like a fun idea :)

Xena, the warrior princess!

Ptolemy (I know this was a male's name. but I know a girl who named her daughter this. I hate it, but as a decoy? Yes.) I also know someone who legit named her son Thor. Ugh!

Andromeda

LMAO that is excellent. Though people might take you seriously if you tell them Thor or Castiel. They're in line with current trends enough to be plausible, haha.

Harry Potter names came to me first: Lavender, Bellatrix, Narcissa, Andromeda, Petunia, Millicent, Merope.

Mythology/Biblical names: Frigga, Jezebel, Kali, Calypso, Iphigenia.

Place names: Sparta, Tuscany, Corinth, Beijing.

We used Optimus Prime as our decoy name, though everyone knew it was a decoy. (This was before the Transformers movies came out). Most of my baby shower gifts came addressed to Optimus.

I'm pretty sure that when I get pregnant, regardless of gender our decoy name will be Timmy. For the longest time whenever my husband refers to our hypothetical future kids he calls them Timmy.

I love the Merida and Daenerys suggestions.
