[identity profile] autopsycorpses.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi all, you may recall a month or so ago, I posted with a list of girl's names, saying that my husband and I agreed on Willow, but that it was too popular for our tastes. We are still continuing to rue to popularity of Willow (and Rue, by the way). Now, I have some more questions for you.

We are considering the merits of:

Willow vs. Winter as first names
Billie vs. Winnie as potential nicknames.
Victoria vs. Victoire as spelling for the middle name (Victoire bing the French spelling, and my mother having French roots but hating both of her names)

Would it change your mind if I told you Winter would be born in May or June (If I am actually pregnant now, as I suspect)?

I like Willow, but it is growing in popularity, indeed.

Winter is cute, too, and I have no issues with seasonal names being bestowed upon babies born year round.

Billie as a nickname for Willow seems like a nonsensical stretch for me.

I prefer Winter over Willow; more unique! Winnie is a cute nickname for Winter.

I also prefer Victoire, but I am a sucker for French! Winter Victoria or Winter Victoire both sound very classy and romantic. Love it.

Willow is definitely uber-popular right now. It's definitely a name you hear a lot of the new babies are called in the school I work at (there have been maybe ten babies born to moms with children at the school and two have been named Willow.) But I do like it- it's kooky but not completely ridiculous. I think Winter is verging on too trendy though and definitely prefer Willow and I think Willow Victoria is lovely. What about Willa instead?

I don't like Billie or Winnie as nicknames.

I tend to agree.

Except I don't think Billie is a stretch for Willow. William's nn is Billy/Billie. Why not Willow?

That's true, but Willow is not a derivative/feminine form of William.

And I don't like Bill/Billy for William anyway; I think that's a stretch as well. I think taking lovely names like William and Willow and bastardizing them into other names - names that even start with other letters - is unfortunate.

*shrug*

I think Willow is a bit more usable, but Winter isn't non-usable. I like both, although Winter is a bit more guilty pleasure to me. Plus, I run into the conundrum with seasons too. It seems a bit cheesy to use the name if the child is born in winter but a bit odd if he/she isn't. I don't think it's too bad to use it in summer though. Willow is technically on my list, but it's kind of lost its shine. Winter used to be on my list, but I think, today, I am liking it more than Willow.

I understand where Billie is coming from, but I do find it a little odd. I think I would prefer Will as a nn for Willow, whereas I find Billie more workable for Wilhelmina. I used not to like Winnie, and I even grew up watching the Wonder Years(!), but I'm starting to think it does sound kind of cute. I think my fondness is coming from the minor character on the Canadian show Flashpoint.

I think I have to go with Willow Victoria or Winter Victoria, although Winter Victoire is nice too. Willow Victoire is just too...round. That probably doesn't make sense.

Agree. Winter > Willow. Also don't think Billie is a nickname for Willow (I know someone who calls their daughter Willie/Will short for Willow).

Winnie is a super cute nn too!

Jimmy Fallon just named his daughter Winnie, if that makes any difference to you...

Shortly after my daughter Eleanor ("Nori") was born, Kim and Kanye announced "Nori" West, which was a bit annoying.

Winter. I grew up with a Willa, and I like that more so than Willow, too.
Billie.
Victoria.

And no, I don't think a "Winter" born in the Spring or Summer would be weird. I have met people named January, April, May, June, Summer, and even a Spryng (eek!) and they were not always named so because of the time of year they were born lol.
