[identity profile] springtide-hfa.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I want my child to have both mine and my boyfriends' last name, but I have a question about the order. Is there a certain order in which hyphenated names go? Like, mother's first, then father's? Or the other way around?
And if it's optional, which sounds nicer:
Macovi-Abbott or Abbott-Macovi?
Macovi is pronounced Muh-COH-vee

It's usually Mother's Name-Father's Name. ;)

I have dads name then moms name. My cousins have their moms name as their second middle name so its mother father. I would recommend considering making one name as the middle name. I have a hyphenated name and I hate it. Maybe its just me though.

yours first - then his.

You're lucky that they sound so beautiful together! Mine/Bf's sound like ass together, hah... but that's alright, I hate my last name.

If you can't decide, I always thought a nice thing to do was when parents merged their last name for the baby. Like yours could be Mabbott or Acovi or something...I'm sure you could figure out something better. :)

I've always heard it's mom's then dad's.

And something this post made me think about: I'm not sure I'd want two last names from birth. As a female, if I then decided I wanted to hyphenate my maiden and married names, that would present a problem. Or a really long name.

I think Abbott-Macovi sounds better. I don't think the order really matters, though.

it's usually mother's then father's, but since the first last name usually gets dropped and i'm a total feminist, i'm partial to the father's then mother's ;).

And I like Macovi-Abbot better anyway.

One thing to think about might be having a name that starts with an A (so you would usually be first in line for roll calls, seating charts, other schools functions, and graduations). I just read some research recently about how people who have A and B lastnames learn to think faster, because they are usually first in line. Whereas if you have a K or M name, you aren't usually called upon first.

Another thing is that Macovi sounds more "ethnic" than Abbott, so it might be easier to have Abbott first (sorry if that sounds rude, I grew up my whole life with a very ethnic sounding first name and people always give me a second look, because they don't think someone of my skin tone could have my name. Just something to think about)

i dont think there is a "correct" way to do it. i think you should just do what you and your other agree on, and what sounds best.

to me, macovi-abbott sounds best. yay for hyphens!

I think Abbott-Macovi sounds better, which works well since that's the "proper" way to doing it.

But if you want both last names to be a part of the child's life forever (with future marriages and new last names, dropping last names and such) I think Abbott works just fine for a middle name, boy or girl.

I think yours sounds better then Bissett-Faurschou aka: longest last name ever, haha. Yours has some flow at least.

Haha... good thing I've never wanted to curse children with my last name, eh?

At least both you and Aaron have UNIQUE last names, *eh hum*.

Yeah, it's not like it really matters, I'd give the bebe's his last name anywho.

I've mostly seen Mother-Father, but I would say go with what sounds better.
I like Abbott-Macovi.

Mabbott reminds me of maggot. But Acovi is good

I don't know about whether there's a correct order or anything. Normally I don't like hyphenated names, but occasionally come across ones that sound good. Yours is one of them, and I think either way sounds great, but Abbott-Macovi is my favourite.

How did you go with telling your boyfriend/parents about the pregnancy? =) (Sorry if this was already discussed in another post)

Glad to hear it worked out ok in the end. I don't think that it's possible for there not to be any initial shock reaction with news like that but it's great that they're supportive now =)

Lol, I wasn't trying to come up with GOOD names, just throwing some out there. I agree, I don't like Mabbott. :)
