I saw this on an advert today Natacha

Why? Just...why? Natasha is a lovely name but in my opinion putting the ch in there makes it look clunky and like it should be said Nata-cha (as in cha cha). Obvioulsy I can see what it is and wouldn't acutally pronounce it this way but the fact remains...

I agree it looks like it should be pronounced like cha-cha, but I could also argue that Charlotte is not a hard Ch, but actually an Sh. I'm guessing this is another language's version of Natasha, though I may be wrong.

I know what you mean about Charlotte but I can't help but it look at it as the hard Ch sound. Just can't help but see it that way even though I know it's not. Well I thought that but it was an English advert and she was English but whether the parents had taken it from another lanugage I don't know!

I went to school with someone called Natassja- pronounced normally. Thought maybe it was a Russian spelling or something, but no, her parents just wanted to be 'different' and called their other daughter 'Renay' ... yep.

I find that really interesting! I had no idea it was a common spelling anywhere and no idea that Natasha was considered weird. Thats what I love about this comm! Always finding interesting facts about names!

"Natasha" doesn't really seem weird to me (I just tend to think it looks Russian, because I've seen it spelled that way in a list of Russian names) but, as a native French speaker, I'm just more used to see "Natacha" (by the way, it's the name of a comic book series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natacha_%28comics%29) and its main character). It makes more sense in French because we have a lot of words with "ch" pronounced like "sh" and probably none with "sh" that are really French (all those I can think of are words we "borrowed" from English), except for those like "désharmonie" in which "sh" is really a "z" kind of s followed by a silent h... so maybe a French speaking person not used to read English would even think that "Natasha" looks like it should be pronounced "Nataza".

I agree that this is a great place to find interesting facts about names. I don't even have or want kids, but I love to read the posts here anyway, just because I like names (and need some for fictional characters from time to time).

There's a German actress named Nastassja Kinski... so maybe Natassja is indeed a more common spelling in another language.
