Help a sister out!
Jan. 27th, 2013 11:58 pmHello peeps!
Here's the deal I am a huge nerd and the boyfriend is more... not such a big nerd. He enjoys shows, books and rpg I do but he's more neutral about it all while I am... a bit crazy. The other day we were discussing names and while we both agreed Eowyn was a good option it got me thinking about how... far I wanna take the naming thing. I would not reeeeally name my child Eragon, for example (as badly as I want to) but I still want to totally geek out with names! I am currently IN LOVE with Eragon and Maurtagh but really? I would probably be a horrible mother naming a child of mine that. So I started thinking maybe just use names that make me think of those like Morgan and... I dunno.
Another problem I have are NATURE NAMES. See... my poor child will not only have the biggest nerd ever as a mother but also a hippie. I love names like Grey, Snow, Frost, Dove, Fawn, Breeze, Rain (spelled like this), Lily, River, Leaf... you catching my drift? So again... a nerd name followed by a nature name? Too much isn't it? I've tried toning it down some but still... Are these names too much?
Boys;
Ares Jaime
Morgan Snow
Moses Aragorn
River James
Achilles James
Girls:
Lily Lucia
Luna Helena (or Helena Luna)
Morgan Frost
Grey Isobel
None of these are set in stone, just some examples I through together but... are they too much?

Date: 2013-01-28 05:30 am (UTC)I'm a nerd, although a little less than my husband, and we just said those names are off the table. I do have a gamer buddy who has a son named Drake and I think it's pretty fitting without being too out there. I think there are happy mediums but you just have to search high and low for them.

Date: 2013-01-28 05:51 am (UTC)River James is my favorite from the boys and I like Luna Helena/Helena Luna and Lily Lucia from the girls list. My daughter's name is Luna so I think it's a pretty awesome name.

Date: 2013-01-28 06:25 am (UTC)Morgan Snow - This is ok, but Snow isn't my style.
Moses Aragorn - I like this.
River - This is ok.
Achilles James - I'm not fond of Achilles, but it's ok.
Lily Lucia - I would prefer Lily Helena just because I don't like both names to start with the same letter.
Luna Helena (or Helena Luna) - I think one of the names needs to end with a letter other than "a". Luna Isobel would be great.
Morgan Frost - This seems more like a boy's name to me.
Grey Isobel - I'm not fond of Grey for a girl. I love Isobel.

Date: 2013-01-28 09:39 am (UTC)River James, Morgan Frost and Luna Helena [Luna is one of my favourites, mostly for geeky reasons XD] are really nice. I love Lily, Ares and Isobel. I like Grey too but I think it flows a little better for me as Isobel Grey :)
I honestly think these names are subtly geeky. Not too obvious and your bf could appreciate them as nice names even if he doesn't love the reference? :D

Date: 2013-01-28 10:51 am (UTC)I also have a friend with a cat named Daenerys. I sorta feel that those names belong on pets, not people. Perhaps try to sick to geeking out on just your child's middle name?
There are lots of good nature names: Clay, Birch, Aspen, Lilac, Violet, Robin, etc. I would consider those types as a first name and a geeky middle.

Date: 2013-01-28 03:22 pm (UTC)Oh he loooves the references... this is why I want to tone it down because even though he likes classic names he might qactually let me name a child Anakin faramir James if I suggest it XD.

Date: 2013-01-28 03:26 pm (UTC)I've always thought if I name a child Ares he'll take after my pacifist ways and I dinno... do ballet or something. And then hate me all his life for naming him after the god of bloody/out of control war!

Date: 2013-01-28 05:10 pm (UTC)Awen sounds similar to Eowyn and means poet or muse.

Date: 2013-01-28 05:11 pm (UTC)Grey is more of a boys name to me but for a girl I think it would be better as a middle name.
River James is lovely too.
I don't like Achilles but I think it's because it just reminds me of anatomy :P
Have to say I am very fond of both Eowyn and Arwen as names (read that you hate Arwen the character though) but some of the male names in LotR rub me the wrong way. Aragorn is okay as a middle though.

Date: 2013-01-28 06:22 pm (UTC)Yeah... again I would most likely steer away from the LotR boy names (*sniff*) because I have to remember this child will HAVE to use their name their entire life and I want something original and geeky without straddling them with a name that will just not work outside the moons of endor or middle earth.

Date: 2013-01-28 06:32 pm (UTC)I have a hard time seeing River for a boy (Doctor Who: River Song, Firefly: River Tam - both female characters and so now it's solidified in my head as a female name, sorry! LOL). For a girl I'd totally see River Frost :D

Date: 2013-01-28 06:43 pm (UTC)Really? I have a hard time seeing it on a girl because the only River I knew of was River Phoenix hah hah. But I guess nature names can be more ambiguous... I mean there is no way (in English anyway) to truly say if they are a boy or girl's name.

Date: 2013-01-28 07:05 pm (UTC)That said, husband wanted an R name for this baby without repeating any in his family, of which there are many. I'm reading the Song of Ice and Fire series. The only help I was were names like Rhegar, Rickon, and names of the like. You know. Not helpful, but I may have taken it there.

Date: 2013-01-28 07:09 pm (UTC)River James sounds great. I first and foremost associate River with River Tam (see icon), but I guess it is more commonly used on boys? I don't know. I have gotten to the point where I can see it on either.
I would use Achilles as a middle name if you really love it. I don't think it really works as a first name. You could maybe get away with Ares and Moses though. I'm not really fond of them to be honest. Moses Aragorn sounds alright, but both names are not commonly used and have strong associations.
Lily Lucia is a bit "L" heavy for me. Lily Helena is slightly better even though it has the same number of L's. It helps that they aren't both starting with the same letter.
I like Helena Luna better than Luna Helena because it is easier to say in that order. Both names are on my list actually.
Grey is a name that I can see for either sex/gender, but I tend to prefer it in the middle name slot, especially on females. Also, I think Isobel Grey just flows so much better. I also think Eowyn Grey would be pretty.
In general, I would pick a more traditional name and either a geeky or nature name to pair together. That way, the child has something "normal" to use if they so desire.

Date: 2013-01-28 07:53 pm (UTC)I think it depends on the experience with the name. Truthfully, I doubt anyone is going to think of River as a girl's name in a broad sense since it's not a common name in general I don't think. I just have a hard time wrapping my own mind around it.

Date: 2013-02-05 01:34 am (UTC)That said, I think there are subtle ways you could weave your geekery into your kids' names without naming them Eragon. Lily and Gray are pretty regular names - Lily in particular is a pretty name for a girl that doesn't necessarily have to have any ties. Even Lily Lucia is fine; most people won't get that reference and the people who do will think it's awesome. Luna Helena is a little more out there but is kind of doable.
But your boys' names, I'm sorry, I just wouldn't. Especially not the Greek god names (Ares and Achilles). River and Morgan are also more girls' names to me - I think you could get away with Morgan for a boy, but River sounds like a straight-up girl's name (maybe because of Firefly or whatever).
