[identity profile] chillinbabejodi.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

In the uk, there's currently a series called 16 kids and counting.. Which clearly features large families, such as the Radford's and the Sullivan's.

Tania and Mike Sullivan have:
Benjamin 18
Stephanie 17
Caitlin 12
Harry 8
Eddie 7
Sid 6
Patrick 4
Oliver 2
Joseph 1
Newborn twins: Elizabeth and Anna

Sue 37 and Noel Radford have:
Christopher 23
Sophie 18 who also has a baby on the show with boyfriend Joe called Daisy
Chloe 16
Jack 14
Daniel 12
Luke 11
Millie 10
Katie 9
James 8
Ellie 7
Aimee 6
Josh 4
Max 3
Tillie (possibly Tilly) May 2
Oscar 1
Newborn Casper

Which obviously got me thinking what I'd name 16 (or more, since Sue had no intentions of stopping at 16) children. So using the same gender order as the Radford's, what would you name your children?

I can barely imagine myself carrying a 3rd child.. how do these women carry pregnancy year after year and not fall over dead from exhaustion?

:( That's sad. So are the mothers or fathers also from large families and that's why they want so many children?

We had a hard enough time thinking of a second boy's name, I can't imagine going through the naming process that much, especially if we had more boys, which is inevitable, I'm sure. For some reason it's always been easier for me to think of girl's names that I liked than boys.

Am I the only one severely disturbed by the fact that the second woman started having children at age 14? That is called child abuse. And her oldest daughter had a baby at (guessing here) 17-18 and while I don't know these people's life and how they live or whatever but that just makes me kind of angry.

okay that does make me feel better... but still 14 years old to have a baby is just wrong in my book. Sorry but it really got to me for some reason...

I think these are all pretty solid names. Much better than the Duggars and their J theme.

Jeez, I tried to do this, and I can't. My husband & I could barely agree on our daughter's name. I'd have no idea how to name 14 hah.

Is it weird that I don't find that horribly upsetting? My mother is the 5th of 13 children, and there are 37 grandchildren in all (ages 32 to 1), and some of the very oldest grandchildren can't keep the youngest ones straight (and vice versa) simply because they aren't around each other that much. Also, as senility creeps in, my grandfather may forget the youngest one's name. But none of this has to do with not caring about the children and no one has been scarred by this. It's just a side-effect of having a lot of relatives.

From: [identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com
That's exactly what I was thinking. Why would you limit it to just one letter if you want a lot of kids, anyway?

From: [identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com
Some sort of inner strength that just keeps them going? I know my grandmother did it 13 times because she wanted a lot children to make a lot of memories with (she'd had a difficult childhood and didn't want that for her kids).

Megan

- starting to struggle a little here!

I'll post my own picks later, but here are my mother and her siblings:

James Francis, Jr. (nn Jim/Jimmy)
Gloria Anne (nn Glo)
Mark Xavier
Mary Theresa (nn Terry)
Helen Mary (my mother, named after her maternal grandmother)
Daniel Henry
Margaret Mary (nn Molly)
Vincent Roch (nn Vinnie/Vince)
Marion Clare
Madeleine Sophie (nn Sophie)
Anne Ellen, Jr.
Peter Stephen
Brigid Cathlin (nn Bip)

I wonder what people would make of these if they'd had a reality show (they'd probably be the "M" people or something).

Teen pregnancy is child abuse?? I don't see any indication that the mother was 'tricked' into having a child or raped... I don't understand how a teen who makes an adult decision (sex) and conceived is somehow being abused, or how it means the resulting child is being abused.

Don't get me wrong, I think the teen pregnancy epidemic is a real problem, and I hate that MTV chooses to glorify teen pregnancy, but 'child abuse' is an incredible stretch. Plenty of teen parents raise perfectly happy and successful children. I'd say its pretty ageist to insinuate that either a teen who gets pregnant was being abused, or that a teen parent is abusing their child.

My thoughts exactly. All of them are very nice names, even though some might not be my personal style. They are infinitely better than the myriad of J names that the Duggars had to pull out of their rears.

I have three kids, so I'll just insert their names in the order that they work with the Radford family.

Calvin nn Cal (my son, 7 months old)
Delanie (my older daughter, 8 years old)
Elysa nn Ellie (my younger daughter, 5 years old)
Griffin
Hugo
Jude
Aria
Ivy
Gideon
Lydia
Maeve
Rhys
Callum
Penelope
Milo
Angus

Okay, that wasn't too difficult. But I think I'd start getting a headache if I tried to figure out middle names as well.

I think she was talking more about the 14 year old being pregnant being child abuse, not the child she had being abused.

Honestly, I can't see how either is child abuse. There is no indication that the mother was raped- and if she was, why would she still be with the same man? For all intents, it's fair to assume the 14 year old mother had an equal responsibility.

She CHOSE to make an adult decision and have sex. That is not abuse. That's a choice.

Pretty much why I chose to ignore the comment instead of answering it... I don't know one would get that raising a child as a teen would be child abuse but maybe I am logical like that.

Date: 2013-01-19 09:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] designingdreams.livejournal.com
All you said is, "That is called child abuse". You didn't specify for which child, which is why I said I don't understand how it would be child abuse for EITHER the child or the teen mother.

How is a pregnant 14 year old (who was obviously in a consenting adult relationship, as she married the baby's father and went on to have a million other kids) child abuse?

If the father was over 16/17/18 (depending on the age of consent where they live), it could be considered statutory rape, but hat is not implied or cited in the article. Also statutory rape =/= child abuse. Your comment is still incredibly ageist. The mom consented to sex. The sex resulted in pregnancy. I can't see any abuse anywhere.

. I don't understand how a teen who makes an adult decision (sex) and conceived is somehow being abused.

As you can see, I also addressed the possibility that you were implying the teen mom had been abused.

At least these names are more diverse unlike the Duggar "J" names. Some of them aren't even that bad at all and really nice.
So if I had to have sixteen children...
William
Isabelle (already have - but doing the gender order)
Aurora
Jace
Adam
Erik
Regan
Ana
Edward
Gwendolyn
Elizabeth
Noah
Scarlett
Christopher
Daniel

(waaay harder than I thought to come up with names that I like...I wonder how they can do it!)

How do you pronounce Elysa?

From: [identity profile] audiobiblio.livejournal.com
Ee-lee-sa. Like Elise with an "a" at the end, really. My husband chose the name, she's some badass queen from an RPG game that he played for a long time. I had a hard time with it at first because a lot of people end up calling her Alyssa (which I don't see at all, but whatever). But she's 5 now and we've gotten used to correcting people, lol. Now HER biggest pet peeve is when people hear her name and call her Alicia instead, like the other kids in the neighborhood. She's very quick to correct them herself.

And every single one of these names is on my list! I'm impressed with myself that I was able to pull together a list of names that long that all sort of go together style-wise. :P

Heh. I'm a serious Catholic, so I know lots of people in big families. We've calculated that if the current age gap through breastfeeding of 2.25 years between births holds for us (and we have no twins) we'll have about seven...

My oldest is a girl so I'll change that one.
Philippa Jamie "Pippa"
Iona Verity "Iona"
Beatrix Carmen "Trixie" or "Bea" (depending on her)
August Patrick "Gus"
Tobias John "Toby"
Xavier Francis "X"
Mary Alice "Mary Alice"
Edith Joy "Edie"
Rhys David "Rhys"
Josephine Elizabeth "Josie"
Susannah Jane "Suzy" or "Annie" (depending on her)
Thaddeus Michael "Thad"
Leo Gregory "Leo"
Adele Eulalie "Della"
Frederick Richard "Freddy"
Benedict Bede "Ben"

Picking firsts was no challenge at all, picking middles took a little time. I could have kept going!

I fel bad for Caitlin in that first list. Her older sibs are 5 years older and her younger sibs are 4 years younger. She's all alone, close-in-age sibling-wise. :(

Also, I can't imagine having 4 kids at or under the age of 2, all at once.
