Crisis!

When we were choosing a name for our (now 8 year old) daughter, we thought about the first/middle names Kira Isis. A friend pointed out that if you say it quickly, it sounds like Crisis. (For the curious, we ended up choosing Kira Jade, and we never did use Isis, despite how much we liked it. Our other daughter is Maelle [my-EL], like the first 2 syllables of "my elephant" and Maelle Isis sounds like a disease or skin disorder related to psoriasis, so we permanently vetoed Isis after that).

Fast forward to a few months ago. A client we serve at my work had a baby girl and named her Kira. Aww, I told my boss when she told me the news. "Kira Isis," my boss continued. My jaw hit the floor but I knew I'd never told my boss about that (I've only been working here a year) so she's not teasing me. Sure enough, there is a photo of little "Crisis" on the screen.

When the client came in and brought "Crisis," aware that my daughter is also named Kira and we had considered the middle name Isis (which she could scarcely believe), I told her we chose a different name but didn't tell her why. Once you hear that, you can't un-hear it. I didn't want to ruin her baby's name for her, but I think someday, someone else will...

Any other unfortunate name combinations you want to share?

you were right about maelle isis, there is a disease called rhabdomyolysis and that's what it would make me think of! although maelle is very pretty!

We have REALLY different naming "likes" per se but I don't know how much I see the Crisis thing... I mean, sure if you say it fast and disregard an A and a pause? Either way I'm geeky enough to think having kids call you 'crisis' is not the worst thing in the world.

my last name starts with a D and I named my daughter Esther. when I was still in the figuring out her name stage, someone here pointed out that TURD was in the middle.. I went with it anyway.

I don't hear Crisis at all either, tbh. Too many syllables you'd have to disregard.

I knew 2 different girls in school named Crystal Ball (last name; two different schools because I moved a lot) and heard of at least one more in town somewhere, and one Crystal Gail (middle name).

I went to high school with a Justin Hale and Justin Case. I like to think their parents were aware of it and thought they were clever!

I went to school with Mike Hunt. Well, his real first name was, of course, Michael. But still, he did get teased. A lot.

I used to work at a video game store and we had a regular customer named Justin Case as well.

I definitely hear the "crisis" thing, and I can see where you are coming from on the Maelle Isis combination too. That's quite the coincidence that someone else chose the name Kira Isis. Kira isn't particularly common (where I live, at least) and has multiple spellings and Isis isn't an often used name either.

We were considering Gabe for a bit. Our last name starts with B. To look at Gabe B------ we didn't see anything wrong. Then my husband said it aloud... Gay B------ is what we heard. So that was off the table. Haven't finalized a name yet.

When I read the first sentence of your comment, I thought the rest of it might be about the nickname Estie in combination with D. I don't see turd in the middle at all.

We had to pair with the last name "HILL"... and the girl name that I liked could not be used: Lauren. I kept thinking people would think of Lauryn Hill, the singer. I also love Liberty/Libby (guilty pleasure!) but Liberty Hill sounded like some restaurant or uppity area of a city LOL

I just gave birth yesterday and we haven't settled on a name yet. Everyone is pestering us and that's already getting old. I couldn't imagine a week!
I haven't really seen baby much yet since he's in NICU and I'm recovering from unplanned c-section. Once husband and I both go over there then we'll decide.

It took me far too long to get the joke behind Willie Recht. These are both hilarious. :)

I once had a manager named Creena Lynn.
I thought it was cute but not only did she hate the name... she automatically hated any dress that came in with crinoline.

I also knew a girl named Golden. Her last name was Rule (spelled slightly differently, though).

I thought perhaps I should've added phonetically. Will-ee-rect. Hah. I always wonder why he didn't go by Bill or even Will...
