Dec. 30th, 2012 10:29 amOk guys here's another one!
My husband and I recently fell in love with Harlow and it has become our number one girl Name. Naturally everyone in the family hates lol but we don't care. What do you think?
Also, what do you do when you can't find sources that agree on the meaning of a name? We are considering Rosalind and Evelyn as mn for Harlow (my aunt needs a name sake for Lynn). I prefer Rosalind but one site said Evelyn means wanted child, and we tried for a very long time before we got pregnant. But another site says beautiful bird.

Date: 2012-12-30 04:29 pm (UTC)I had a name book when I was a kid that said Evelyn means "a hazel nut". It always cracked me up because my mom's name is Evelyn and her mother's is Hazel.

Date: 2012-12-30 09:52 pm (UTC)I usually rely on two name sites, thinkbabynames.com and behindthename.com, because they seem like the most legit to me. (Neither of them have a straight answer on Evelyn, though.) "Wanted child" seems more likely to me for two reasons: A. I don't see Evelyn as a mix of Avis/Ava and Lynn. B. Saying Lynn means "beautiful" seems like such an oversimplification to me.

Also, I pretty much just trust Behind the Name, and not much else.

Date: 2013-01-10 12:08 am (UTC)I prefer Rosalind myself, both independently and as a middle name for Harlow. BTN says Rosalind comes from the Germanic roots hros, meaning "horse,", and linde, meaning "soft, tender," and the spelling was changed to resemble the Latin phrase rosa linda, or "beautiful rose."
