Ok guys here's another one!
My husband and I recently fell in love with Harlow and it has become our number one girl Name. Naturally everyone in the family hates lol but we don't care. What do you think?

Also, what do you do when you can't find sources that agree on the meaning of a name? We are considering Rosalind and Evelyn as mn for Harlow (my aunt needs a name sake for Lynn). I prefer Rosalind but one site said Evelyn means wanted child, and we tried for a very long time before we got pregnant. But another site says beautiful bird.

I had a name book when I was a kid that said Evelyn means "a hazel nut". It always cracked me up because my mom's name is Evelyn and her mother's is Hazel.

I only trust ONE source for names and that is: behindthename.com because they are (or started as) historians and check the past of a name before ever posting it on their website. I don't trust most books unless the author is a verified historian.

That being said Harlow is lovely =) and I like Evelyn much more than Rosalind.

that's why we didn't tell anyone what we were naming our kids until after they were born. it's harder for people to tell you they dislike a name for a child that's already born.

Harlow always makes me think of the insult exchange between Margot Asquith and Jean Harlow; Harlow was pronouncing the t in Margot and Asquith corrected her that it was silent "just like Harlow (harlot)".

I think if you and your husband both love it, and already don't care what your family think then you have nothing holding you back <3 I think Harlow Rosalind or Harlow Evelyn will sound beautiful together. I think I prefer Rosalind a bit more, as I think Harlow Rosalind epitomizes romance :)

I like Harlow a lot.

I usually rely on two name sites, thinkbabynames.com and behindthename.com, because they seem like the most legit to me. (Neither of them have a straight answer on Evelyn, though.) "Wanted child" seems more likely to me for two reasons: A. I don't see Evelyn as a mix of Avis/Ava and Lynn. B. Saying Lynn means "beautiful" seems like such an oversimplification to me.

I read The Yarn Harlot's blog and about a year and a half ago her friend named her daughter Marlow. I HATED it at first, but it's grown on me (though I still dislike Marley). I like Harlow, but it's not a name I would personally use.

Harlow has been on my name list for a long time, but since my husband and I have been unsuccessful when it comes to getting pregnant, we ended up giving the name to one of our cats. I LOVE Harlow Evelyn. I'm not fond of Rosalind for personal reasons, but it is a lovely name.

I like Harlow quite a bit, actually. It reminds me of Shalom Harlow, and Jean Harlow, both of whom are pretty awesome ladies.

And Harlow Rosalind is such a gorgeous combination.

I typically tend to trust BehindTheName.com more so than other baby name sites. They say Evelyn was derived from Aveline, which in turn came from Avila. Avila comes from the Germanic root "avi", the meaning of which is unknown but which possibly means "desired." Wikipedia has a similar explanation, saying that it's possibly a variant of Ava or the Irish Aibhilin, both of which also come from that Germanic root. An alternate explanation is that it comes from the Irish name Eibhleann, which means "radiance" or "beauty." So I can see where both the 'wanted child' and 'beautiful bird' definitions come from. The true answer is we really don't know what it means.

I prefer Rosalind myself, both independently and as a middle name for Harlow. BTN says Rosalind comes from the Germanic roots hros, meaning "horse,", and linde, meaning "soft, tender," and the spelling was changed to resemble the Latin phrase rosa linda, or "beautiful rose."
