No actual children will be named in result of this; I'm naming a fictional character who insists that she uses her middle name exclusively (or her first initial and middle name professionally) and no one calls her by her first name except for her mother.

Her middle name is Anna, but I'm having a heck of a time coming up with a first name that goes with it. Ideas?

if she insists on going by her middle name, that could potentially mean she doesn't like her first or her first-middle combo, so i vote polly cause it makes me laugh that someone could be named "polly anna lastname".

I like this one. I was going to suggest making it a (potential, depending on taste, I guess) horrid first name. Hortense, Gertrude, Barbie, Venus are all odd names that sound fairly decent with Anna. TBH, when it comes to fiction, I prefer to know a bit about age, time frame, location, occupation, etc. when determining an appropriate name. Someone born in 1949 would likely have much different name choices than someone in 2013 - or at the very least, it would be a bigger statement to her background if her parents named her something like Khailley, McKenna, Evan/Maxwell/Luca, or maybe even just Jennifer back in 1960 or something.

First thought was Louise (loo-EES).

Lily
Addison
Grace

I feel like something a little old-fashioned could work, e.g. Dorothy, Judith, Margaret, Millie. The other possibility would be something really outrageous/unusual, maybe a noun, that she wouldn't want to deal with professional (think celebrities' kids: e.g. Blue, Apple, Pilot, etc.)

How about a virtue name? Prudence, Temperance, Chastity, etc.

My first thought is Wendy, since my mom's name is Wendy Anne. I think it works :)

I knew a girl whose mother named her Charity and then dumped her with her grandmother to be raised. She went exclusively by her middle name.

Oh wow, sorry I missed this earlier! My computer broke. :( I write sci-fi too, so I'm all about it. Did you pick a name yet?

I agree with making it an unappealing name that still sort of flows with Anna. My ideas:

Geraldine Anna
Inez Anna

Now that I'm trying to write a list, it is tough to think of a name that someone would place with Anna in the middle. Anne is more of a middle name; Anna is tricky. (not suggesting that you change her name; just musing over what a difference one letter can make)

In that case, I either vote something very old-fashioned like Hortense or Gertrude, or something ridiculously cutesy like Addysyn or Caylee. Just something she doesn't think suits her.
