Dec. 19th, 2012 06:16 pmFound out I'm pregnant yesterday so we FINALLY get to really think about names!
We are both hoping for a boy, mainly because we have already chose Wesley Warren as our boy name and we love it. Warren is to honor my dad, Werner, who sometimes goes by Warren when Americans can't say his name lol.
But can you think of ANYTHING that could be the girl version of Werner/Warner/Warren?
If we do have a girl it is way more complicated. I'd like to either honor my late friend Samantha Jo (however Jo is my mom's name and omg I'd hear on and on how it was for her and I don't want that), my Nana Gladys Marie (not fond of Gladys or Marie, and my MIL's middle name is also Marie), or my aunt Sally Lynn (Lynn is too common, and I can't use Sara or Sadie). Any help?

Date: 2012-12-20 12:50 am (UTC)1) Give her the name Samantha as either a first or a middle name.
2) Do the Jewish thing and take the first letter of the honoree's name and name your daughter something that begins with that letter.
2a) You could take each of the letters you have here - S, J, G, M, and L - and possibly give her a super-long name, or any combination thereof.
3) You can find related/similar names and give them to your daughter.
3a) Marie ---> Mary, Marina, Marianne, Milena, Miriam, Molly, Rosemary, Marybeth, Maribel, Marietta, Annemarie
3b) Jo ---> Jocelyn, Josephine, Joan, Johanna, Jane
3c) Sally ---> Suri, Sarai
3d) Lynn ---> Madeleine/Madelyn, Adeline, Caitlin, Eleanor/Elinor, Jocelyn, Jacquelyn, Linnea, Rosalind
3e) Gladys ---> Claudia (yes, really)

Date: 2012-12-20 02:08 am (UTC)My first thought for a feminine take on Werner is Verena, actually. (Assuming Werner is pronounced roughly ver-ner?) It's the name of an old roommate of mine, nn Rena. Always thought it was really pretty. :)
For the rest, I'll second the mention of the Jewish tradition of using the first initial as the tribute, i.e. for Jo it could be Julia, Jasmine, Jacquelline, for Gladys it could be Genevieve, Gwendolyn, or Grace, etc etc.

Date: 2012-12-20 02:58 pm (UTC)We're Jewish, and when someone wants to honor a deceased person (we don't name after the living) you can take the name directly. The problem arrises when you have one beloved member and everyone wants to use that name. Then we just use the first letter. So you could do a girl's W name (Wendy?) - but keep in mind if you have a boy later, you'll have two W names. You could do something like Giovanna or Gina Samantha...
When we were naming my daughter, it was tough because we had so many people we would like to honor. We chose my grandmother and my husband's grandmother to come up with Vivian Mary, but eventually we had to agree to just hope for more girls, or she'd be one of those kids with 7 middle names.
