And I knew I had to share it with Baby Names :-)

The girl names seem alright, some of the boy names make me cringe.  Like Brantley and Zeiden.  Does this live up to your experiences with the new babies in your life?

I told you about the most popular baby names for boys and girls (plus similar alternatives for anyone looking to stay away from the Top 20 list) earlier this week. And now? Now it’s time to look at the popular baby names of the future. By analyzing the Social Security Administration’s list of popular baby names (and with a little pop-culture know-how), I compiled a list of the fastest-growing names. Names that just might indicate some future chart-topper trends.

So even if you think you’re picking a unique baby name (like Mila or Brantley), you might have yourself a Sophia or Jacob instead. Take a look at my picks for baby names on the rise:

Girl names sure to sky-rocket:

  • Amelia
  • Charlotte/Charley (sure to be a Top 10 soon)
  • Scarlett
  • Harper (the fastest-rising girl name in the Top 100)
  • Penelope (especially now that a certain Kardashian, possibly responsible for the “Mason” boom, named her daughter Penelope. Sigh.)
  • Adele
  • Estelle/Stella
  • Briella/Brielle (the fastest-rising girl name of 2011)
  • Mila (another name that skyrocketed last year — presumably because of a Ms. Kunis)
  • Aubrey/Aubree
  • Molly
  • Violet
  • Lucy
More girl names on the rise:
  • Isla and other short -ah ending names: Aria, Luna, Cora, Eva, Nora, and Clara (in the tradition of Emma, Olivia, and Ava).
  • Elsie, Elise, Eliza and Eloise (the new El- names?)
  • Ivy
  • June
  • Juniper
  • Olive
  • Names ending in -lyn or -lynn (Evelyn, Raelynn, Emmalynn, Addilynn, etc.). This is a huge trend.
  • Names ending in -anna (Audrianna, Lilliana, Aviana, etc.)
  • Alice
  • Bryn
  • Harlow
  • Kinsley/Kinley/Kensley
  • Vera
  • Ember and other “Em-” names like Emery and Emerson
  • Milania
  • Bristol
  • Kennedy
Boy names sure to sky-rocket:
  • Brantley (the fastest-rising boy name in 2011)
  • Jackson and all of its alternative spellings: Jaxon, Jaxen, Jaxon
  • Declan (the next Aiden?)
  • Grayson/Greyson
  • Elijah (already ranks in the Top 20, but it’s steadily climbing to the top along with Liam)
  • Levi
  • Henry
  • Oliver
  • Isaiah
  • Asher
  • Silas/Sylas
  • Milo
  • Wyatt
More boy names on the rise:
  • Iker (the fastest-rising boy name of 2011)
  • Raylan/Rylen
  • Maximiliano
  • More “X” names: Felix, Axel, Jax, Rex, Dexter, Dax, and Lennox.
  • Harvey (It’s still in the 800s here in the States, but it just entered the U.S. Top 1,000 last year after the name ranked in England’s Top 50. The next name import?)
  • Flynn
  • Jasper
  • Atticus
  • Abram
  • Abel
  • Cato and other “-O” ending names: Arlo, Hugo, Theo, and Nico
  • Kayson
  • Archer
  • Kingston
  • Surnames (in addition to Jackson): Hayes, Parker, Lennox, Sullivan, and Edison.
  • Zeiden

I wonder if Brantley is because of Brantley Gilbert? Jackson seems fairly predictable. I didn't know Elijah was so popular and I've never even heard of Iker.

A lot of the girls names, I can only picture on old ladies. (the El names, June, Alice, Olive and especially Vera.)

I like:

Violet
Lucy
June
Olive
Harlow

Levi
Henry

I wanna know what the heck an Iker is and why it's the fastest-rising boy name of 2011.

Iker? I've never heard that one before. And I don't think people name their kid Jasper anymore, either.

Phew! We're about to TTC & of course I've already grilled my husband about names, none of them are on the lists. I'm kind of surprised our boy name isn't on the rising list, it rose slowly from 500 to 350 over the last decade.

Molly, Elise, and Bryn are on my girl name list. Bryn is a "middle name only" option. I hate pretty much all of those boy names. Which explains why my boy name list currently has 0 names on it. :) This baby better be a girl....

Vera and Declan are two of my favorites but I'm surprised to see that their growing to be so popular. I also really like Milo.

I have a cat Estella nn Stella and I feel like people have been saying that it's a name that is rising for the past 5 years, but I have yet to see it "explode" in popularity. I find that interesting. I can totally see it sky rocketing into the top 10, but yet, it never does.

The only girl names that surprise me are Juniper and Vera.

The only boy names that surprise me are Wyatt and Iker (I've never even heard of this?).

I'm really surprised not to see Eleanor (especially if Juniper is on the rise, because I think Juniper sounds more serious than Eleanor). I think it has "sky rocketing" potential. And yeah, some of these are just ugly. Luckily, NONE of our choices are on here! Some of the runners up were, like Clara and Henry. I knew they would become super popular, so I avoided them.

I've got a Jackson, a Rylan, and a Grayson as nephews. Honestly, I feel like Jackson has been super popular for ages though. I actually like most of these names. I wouldn't use any of them if a kid were to fall from the sky right now, but I like them. I considered Asher and Oliver for a while, but Oliver has been popular for like 9000 years now. Kennedy as a girls name has been growing on me, but I wouldn't use it.

Edit: I'm surprised Sebastian isn't on here. My SIL told me she almost changed her oldest's name at the last moment because she found out there were five other boys named Sebastian in the same hospital on the same day.

Names on my list:
Charlotte
Penelope
June (middle name only)
Juniper
Alice
Declan
Felix
Hugo

Names formerly on my list:
Stella
Lucy
Eloise
Oliver
Isaiah
Dexter
Jasper

I also have Elizabeth on my list with the intended nickname of Eliza and Theodore with Theo as a possible nickname.

Some of these I'm more attached to than others. Some of these I'm really hoping don't skyrocket.

The only Iker I know is Iker Casillas (main goalkeeper for Spain's National Football/Soccer team & Real Madrid) & I didn't know it was popular or rising, lol.

Like I said to another poster, the only Iker I've heard of is Spain's Mens National Football/Soccer team's goalkeeper. Also for Real Madrid. Aside from that, Never heard of it, nor have I seen anyone's baby named that.

I considered Asher but I just heard that "Brimful of Asha" song in my head since I really thought they were saying Asher for awhile (catchy song just not something I want to name my kid after). Oliver was on my short list (though husband didn't like it).

My husband likes Sebastian but I still associate that name with the crab from The Little Mermaid.

My cousin named her son Jasper, he's about 5 months old.

I always think of Jasper from The Simpsons.

Milo is my most favorite boy name. :(

Also, when they said Declan was the new Aiden, it made me wonder if people are going to alter it (a la Jaiden, Braden, Caiden, etc). Will we start seeig Brecklan, Leclan, Zeclan? LOL.

I know Luna is a rising name but Harvey... I don't see that rising much. Or maybe I'm just hoping? lol Most of the names I like and would actually use are on the lists. Harvey(my 5 year old's name), Luna(my 3 year old's name), Clara, Asher, Silas. My other son's name is Jonas, when I named him I thought the name was more popular than it actually seems to be. I considered Asher for him(both Jonas and Asher are in a book from my childhood that I love) but I noticed it was getting super popular.

Some of those I get, some I hate. We're naming our son Atticus, despite the rising popularity.

We have an Ivy, and I was really surprised to learn that it's become a popular name when I started following this community. We were shooting for something less trendy. In fact, Adele has been one of my top favorite names forever, but I took it off the list after the singer came out. I knew its popularity would skyrocket.

Eleanor & El-names have always been favorites too, but three girls and I still haven't talked my hubby into it. I've also always liked Stella, Scarlett, and Audrey (not 'b'), but they've become so common that I probably wouldn't pick them anymore. I also considered Olive as a middle name, since it's a family name, but nixed that since it's getting trendy right now.

We'll be naming a son Isaiah if we ever have one though, regardless of popularity. We've been unable to find any other boy name we agree on.

I know waaaaaay too many Harpers, Ashers, Milas, and Milos. Several of these names are favorites that I've picked for characters though.

I have a Stella, a Felix, and a Mila lol but I've yet to meet any other kids with the same names as mine. Maybe just because I live in a tiny bumpkin town in the middle of nowhere, though.

I'm nowhere near my baby making time but I did get a puppy last year and call her Isla then I had a foal born this year and called her Lyra so I guess I'm falling into the trends.

Some of these are fucking awful though. Imagine being called Juniper or Hayes!!!

Totally agree with the name Harper. Suddenly I know so many little Harpers, or soon-to-be moms choosing Harper as a name. And I don't think I know anyone with that name over 5. Kind of like Ruby five or six years ago.

I'm bummed that two of our favorite names, Henry and Olive, are on the list. But I'm not surprised---Olive seems to be so trendy lately and our neighbors just named their baby Olive. Henry has been on the radar in hipster neighborhoods for years. I love them both, but cringe at the idea of our Henry being Henry S. for the rest of his life.

This is just my current boy name obsession: Beau. DH likes it, having a rough time finding a middle name for it, but we thik we have one nailed down. We're planners, hopefully this baby won't be named years in advance, hoping to get pregnant in the next month or asap.

Some recent names that people who've given birth around me have given their babies:

Eva (girl)
Charlie (boy)
Declan (boy)
Maya (girl)
Waylon (boy)
Marlon (boy)

Some on the list, some will probably join them there!

My husband loves the name "Wyatt" for a boy and of course I see it there on the list of skyrocketing boys' names :) I kind of get it now how most parents just sort of throw their hands up in the air and say, "Eff it, who cares!" I have a super common early 80s name and it doesn't really mean anything.

We also picked an uncommon middle name (as did my brother and his wife who just had Charlie two weeks ago) so we will get our uniqueness points there, ha!

Adele had been on my list for over a decade and it was never on the popularity charts. I was watching and it was not even in the top 1000 for the last 30-some years. It only shows up in the last two years. I don't think that it would have gained any real popularity if the singer hadn't become so famous. Adele was such an unheard of name that she only needed to go by her first name for recognition. That is how rare it was.

But that will no longer be. Everyone has discovered the beauty of Adele and people are using it.

I like both those names. I've liked Juniper since I was a kid, and every Hayes I have met has been such a nice guy that I'm fond of the name.

Don't worry too much. People are choosing a wider variety of names, so that even the top names are not as numerous as the top names of our childhood were. Whereas Jennifer in 1980 would have two other Jens in her class and another 20 in her grade, Sophia of 2012 will probably be the only one in her class with maybe 3 others in her grade. Something like that. If you look at the total number named such and such, you can see there are far fewer of each name.

Date: 2012-10-29 02:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tiffanytee.livejournal.com
And the 80s names were far more numerous than today's top names. So even if you name your child the most popular name of the year, it is not going to be anywhere near as common as those top names of the 80s. Sophia is not like Jennifer.

I know! I was so, so miffed at her for that last time I was pregnant. I thought I was close to winning the hubs over on the name, too. I guess I should be glad that folks are starting to accept its awesomeness. It's been on my list for decades. :/

Harper & Violet are names I've liked for a while, as are Aria & Cora.
Nora(h) is growing on me.
Ember is a bit of a guilty pleasure name, but I love Em- names (& the nickname Emmy); Emmeline is the top contender for actual use. Could see Emery/Emerson as boy names, even if they're rising for girls.
Prefer Audrey to Aubrey/Aubree.

I think a lot of the other girl names mentioned are cute, even if they wouldn't necessarily make my list. Same can't be said for the boys; aside from Henry, Asher & Milo, I feel lukewarm at best regarding the rest of the list.
