[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A friend of mine showed me this forum (http://www.circleofmoms.com/teenage-mothersyoung-mothers/anyone-else-have-unique-baby-name-that-no1-else-few-people-have-397301/3) ... and I about died reading some of these names. The original question was" "anyone else have unique baby name that no1 else/few people have?" Most of the "crazy" ones seem to be "out there" because of spelling, except for Stetson, Staten, Bella-Peach, and Serendipity. I see only one abuse of apostrophes and four hyphens.

And then there are some really nice names like:

Nicolette Rose (Why would this be labeled bizarre?)
Allegra Cole
Levi (This mother apparently doesn't have yooneekness problems with boys' names.)
Olivia Reese
Josiah
Aurora Angelina (A bit much together, but two very nice names separately.)
Nadia-Jade (This could do without the hyphen, but it's a nice combo.)
Parker, Ivy, Bentley (A bit trendy, but still pretty good.)

And then there are the sibsets with 1-3 nice names and several odd (or oddly spelled ones), like the Luciano, Serendipity, Bellatessa sibset. But overall, the name that stood out to me because of "oddness" was Staten John Cardinal because I saw it and went "Okay, I'm Catholic and a proud member of (baseball) Cardinal Nation, but why would you give that to a kid?"

Or Queenie for Queens.

Makes me wonder if little Allegra will have siblings named Claritin & Zyrtec!

I just spent way too much time putzing around that page and found:

Khrystyan ("pronounced Christian")
Eoghan ("Owen")
Indicah (um, that is a type of marijuana...)
Jewelionna (Julianna)
Crossifixio (wtf?)
Daeten (m) and Taesen (f, sibset)
Khaeleighani (Kay-lee-ah-ni)
Siblings: Lemuel (m), meshach (m), Appolos (m), Melchizedek (m), Enoch (m) and Candace (f, pronounced "can-day-see")
Siblings (all f): Braya, Braylie, Brynalee
Deen Daniyal (Dean Daniel)

Eoghan is pretty common in Ireland I believe. And Meshach, Melchizedek, and Enoch are all biblical names. The rest completely awful though! Indicah?!? Poor Candace is going to be correcting people her entire life.

Allegra or Alegra is a very common Italian and Spanish name meaning Joy.

Candace is pronounced Can-diss, usually. I do not undestand their pronunciation at all. Way to butcher a lovely name :/

STETSON? REALLY? :|

Jorlynd made me think of Eorland Grey Mane from Skyrim XDD

Elyza'belle is just plain wrong.

I only like Parker, Ivy and Eva Grace, though I have heard of LOADS of Evas and Avas around here.

I like Haven, although I would never have thought of it as a name... until Jessica Alba named her baby that. I have a feeling it's about to get really popular. Poor Blaze. And Dyson. I bet he'll get a lot of vacuum references.

Please name your child Allegra, so they can forever be associated with sinus medication. *headdesk*

See, I don't think of the allergy medicine when I see Allegra as a name, even though I've taken the medicine before. Allegra was a female name first, unlike the two others you mentioned. It means happy/joyous, and it can be a musical shout-out to the term "allegro", meaning fast. I also think of a mid-'90s Nick Jr. show where the main character was named Allegra---I heard that before I began seeing commercials for the allergy medicine, which started shortly after that.

This kind of comment reminds me of the people who complain about little girls name Mercedes when they clearly don't know that it was a name long before it was a car.

It was a name first and now that there are generic versions of it, that association may not last.

I know, but Allegra is now sold OTC & is ridiculously popular among patients who cannot afford RX antihistamines. For a good while, I believe it will be associated with that. Especially here in the South, where everyone and their grandma have sinus problems year round.
