Going on a name hunt
Aug. 22nd, 2006 10:31 pmIn the interest of boredom and evolving name lists, I did a little brainstorming today at work to see what's currently making my "I Really Would Name A Child This" list. Sadly, Mara Jade seems to be getting demoted.
Anyways, I have three possibly top-of-the-list girls names, but I can't come up with any middle names I like for them.
Ava
Dana
Lily
THE RULES.
I don't care how popular they are. I'm a Katherine from the 80s and I survived it.
Following that, no Katherine combinations. Sadly, Katherine is pretty much my favorite choice for all three right now ("Dana Katherine" is just coincidence. No, really. REALLY). I've come to realise that my not liking my name is just because it has never felt very "me"...because right now I think it's pretty much the best name ever.
So anyways, more Katherine-like names would be great! What is Katherine-like? Classic and classy and pretty, how elusive.
For Ava and Dana I would prefer mns that start with a consonant, but if the vowels roll off your tongue that's okay too.
BONUS ROUND.
What do you think of Dana Alice? I am not sure I like the "-a A-" bit, but maybe I do. I can't decide. I want to use Alice somewhere, after my grandmother (I'm also considering Lily Alice and Alice Claire).
ANOTHER BONUS.
My top boys' names right now:
Christopher (nn Kit)
William (nn Will)
Other choices/possible middle names: James, Owen, Henry, Bradley, Trygve (mn only!)
AND NOW I AM SHUTTING UP.

Date: 2006-08-23 03:57 am (UTC)I think middle names for Ava and Dana would sound better starting with a consonant.
Some possible suggestions:
Marie
Margaret
Marguerite
Christine
Rose (maybe not for Lily ;D)
How 'bout...
Date: 2006-08-23 04:18 am (UTC)Dana Mae or Margaret (like the post above)
Lily Grace

Date: 2006-08-23 06:30 am (UTC)Similar names according to The Baby name wizard are:
Sarah, Rachel, Christina, Caroline and Elizabeth.
It also lists Kat, Kate, Kathy, Katie, Kay, Kit, Kitty, Kari, Katia, Katharine, Catherine, Kathryn, Katerina, Katharina
I think Kate is a cute middle name for all three.
How do you pronounce Trygve? I went to school with a Trygge, pronounced Trih-guh.. like Trigger with a NY accent or something.

Date: 2006-08-23 12:42 pm (UTC)We considered Alice as a middle name in honor of my husband's grandmother, and it may get used yet. I like it quite a lot with Claire and Dana - the A's don't blend together when I say it aloud. I also think such simple (in a good way!) first names could carry a longer, fancier middle name, like Katherine, Charlotte, Amelia, Elspeth, Lydia, etc. I second using the Social Security website to see what was popular around the turn of the last century.

Date: 2006-08-23 01:41 pm (UTC)That one actually made me laugh because it's so out of keeping with the other names you list!
How does one pronounce that?

Date: 2006-08-23 02:07 pm (UTC)Yes I LOVE Dana Katherine. I totally fell in love with the name Dana from XF, and Katherine is just the only middle name that really grabs me. I just wouldn't want to give my children my name anywhere, it feels weird.

Date: 2006-08-24 01:03 am (UTC)Hahaha, yeah right! No, seriously though, when I first saw your post and you had Dana listed and an X-Files icon and then you asked for middle name requests, I was so going to say Dana Katherine until I read the next paragraph, haha.
Ever since I started watching X-Files, the name William is growing on me more and more.

Date: 2006-08-24 03:41 am (UTC)I also love Lily, but more as a mn (Summer Lily is a favorite) but I think that Lily Danae (prn duh-nay) sounds very pretty and combines two of your favorite names....but it's from Greek mythology, so probably classic in a different way :-P
I like Lily Alicia (Ah-lee-sha) more than Lily Alice

Date: 2006-08-24 03:54 am (UTC)Lily Charlotte
I like Lillian Rachel, but I don't think Lily Rachel fits as well.

Date: 2006-08-24 05:35 am (UTC)Anyway, yeah, I really like the name Dana, too, but in Australia it's always pronounced Dah-na rather than Day-na so it wouldn't work if I used it. I'm totally naming my son Fox, though! Maybe... But yes, other names that go with Dana - maybe Charlotte? Or *cough* Gillian (just joking. Sort of.)? Something that doesn't end in an "a" and preferably doesn't start with one either. Danny Sally? Hehehe... that sounds a bit too much like Dana Scully. But yes. Um. Serious suggestions. Hmmm. Nope, that's not my forte.

Date: 2006-08-24 09:14 pm (UTC)Charlotte is lovely, too.

Date: 2006-08-24 09:16 pm (UTC)I am a little reluctant to attribute William to the X-Files...he wasn't around long and he's not in most fanfic...but I suppose it is when I started considering it. I'm hopeless, apparently.
Your icon is adorable.

Date: 2006-08-25 12:28 am (UTC)William is a common name, and I had heard of it millions of times before X-Files, but X-Files is the first time it started to become something I would actually consider naming my son and it's only because it grew on me, but not because I want to name a kid after the X-Files. You don't see me naming anything Fox, do you? Haha.

Date: 2006-08-25 12:49 am (UTC)Except I could name a hamster "Fox." Maybe a plant. Probably a plant, I haven't yet graduated to keeping pets alive (I'm still working on the plants).
