[identity profile] magyargirl3.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I've been feeling kinda clucky lately, so I've been writing down some of my favorite baby names. My top two favorite girl names are Christabel Marie and Ann Hadewych (Hah - duh - wich*). I've loved the name Christabel ever since I found it in a 60's era baby name book, and Marie is my middle name - if I had multiple daughters, I'd want the first one to have my middle name, since it was my grandma's middle name, and I want to pass that on. Hadewych is an older version of Hedwig, and is also the name of a Christian mystic, and Ann seemed to flow perfectly with that.

*hock in the back of your throat sound, like in L'chaim

My sister, however, hates Ann Hadewych. For one thing, she hates that spelling of Ann (someone spent too much time in Green Gables, methinks), plus she thinks that everyone would call her Hate Witch, because apparently that's what Hadewych looks like, and everyone would automatically know her middle name, since middle names are called so often in school. *eyeroll*

Am I crazy for wanting to give a daughter of mine that name? Is my sister overreacting? Do both of us need to go boil our heads? :P

Ann Hadewych sounds like "Ann had a witch." to my ears. :/

+1.

And it would be the same issue with any first.

Also the voiceless velar fricative is a hideous sound. Sorry, that's my opinion.

In a larger sense, it's pointless to get into serious arguments about baby names unless and until you either have a partner amenable to them or decide to go it alone parenting. Especially for the more out there names. In the mean time, just treat it as a diversion.

I'm not the hugest fan of Hadewych, but Christabel Marie and Ann are nice. As for how your sister feels about the spelling of Ann...if she doesn't like it, then she can name her own child Anne. That's just my two cents. :)

I agree w/ the previous poster about Ann had a witch. Although it is interesting. I don't think anyone will know to put the l'chaim thing in Hadewych and I think it sounds better without it, no offense.

I like Christabel as well, I saw it in a fiction book in middle school. Christabel Marie sounds pretty.

I love Christabel Marie. I also love Ann spelled this way. However, Hadewych not only looks ugly to me, but, from what you said, would sound rather harsh and ugly as well. I would go with Hedwig instead.

The names are nice enough, but Hadewych isn't pretty and is way too "out there" for me and I agree it sounds like "Ann Had A Witch."

I would tell my sister, "well, you can name your kids what you want, and I can name my kids what I want." Seriously, I hate the name my sister gave her son, but I don't complain about it. I didn't try to talk her out of it. I think Ann Hadewych is an awesome name.
