[identity profile] twelvehandshigh.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband and I are going through our respective lists of names and making a shortlist. I'd love some outside opinions. Be honest with me, I promise I can take it, haha. Drawbacks, teasing nicknames, feel free to say whatever. We're kind of hippies, keep that in mind.

for a girl
Sunshine
Rosalie (not after the vampire, it was my mom's name...will people just think of twilight though?)
Rosalind/Rosalyn
Maya
Felice
Leilani
Irie
Noelani
Keziah
Corina
Raizele (see above, rose or rosalie)
Adrienne
Nancy
Scarlet

For a boy
Rashaun (I really like Rashaun Irie or Isaiah Rashaun...)
Skyler
Jamie
Isaiah

I didn't even know there was a Rosalie in Twilight! I think the only name messed up by the connection is Bella, even Edward and Jacob are too common/history-laden to have people only thinking of twilight, so you're good.

I like Leilani, Rosalind and Rashaun best.

okay, honest opinions on any names I had opinions on

Sunshine - Hippy is one thing, but i knew a girl named sunshine and she spent her entire life a) defending her name, and b) trying to be taken seriously. As a middle name it's not bad, but not as a first name.
Rosalie (not after the vampire, it was my mom's name...will people just think of twilight though?) - I know nothing of Twilight (I moved myself under a rock and refused to come out) so I think it's a perfectly nice name :P
Rosalind/Rosalyn - I prefer Rosalyn, but both are nice
Leilani - I'm not quite sure how to pronounce this one, which is the only issue I could see.
Raizele (see above, rose or rosalie) - Much prefer Rosalie, this is going to lead to pronunciation issues.

For a boy
Rashaun - not a fan, no specific reason, just kind of meh.

I love Rosalie and fuck Twilight, I say!
I also like:
Rosalind
Kezia (but without the h, the h makes me want to pronounce it keh-ZIE-ah)
Corinna
Scarlet
Isaiah

I actually really love all of your girls names :D Sunny for Sunshine would be adorable. Adrienne and Scarlet and Nancy are in my baby names for sure. I really really wish I could love the name Rosalind more but it reminds me of Roslin/Roslyn and that has some icky connotations for me.

I don't love Rashaun or Skyler but Jamie and Isaiah are really nice :)

On the Twilight note, I hate that so many pretty names are now associated with it. I used to love Bella and Alice A LOT, now I'm really not into them. I think there are enough other Edwards for me to still like that and I really like Jasper still. Esme is also lovely but, like yourself, I'd be worried someone would think that I'd called a kid after someone from that awful set of books. Mind you by the time I'm likely to have kids, hopefully the fad will be over :p

Sunshine may be cute for a nickname- but all I can think is someone will be using it sarcastically
..the rest are all ok...if you want to honor your Mom- don't worry about the connection to twilight

I love:
Rosalie
Rosalind/Rosalyn
Leilani
Noelani
Keziah (though I prefer it without the h)
Corina (though I prefer the Karina spelling)
Adrienne
Scarlet
Jamie

Sunshine - I don't know, imagine how inherently funny it might be if she's really dour. It's a cute idea, though. Maybe middle name material?

Irie - I've never heard this name before, but I have to admit, it's very cute. I'd imagine she'd probably go through life being called Irene, though.

Nancy - This is an old aunt name to me (probably because I actually do have an Aunt Nancy). I can't imagine it on a child of today at all.

Maya, Felice, Raizele, Rashaun, Skyler, and Isaiah aren't my style, but that's just me.

these names are kind of all over the place, style-wise. do you plan to have more than one kid? if so, you might want to go through and cross off anything that doesn't 'go' with anything else on the list. there are several that could fit in the same style but several others that are kind of a class of their own.

Hawaiian names on non-Hawaiians sort of weird me out.

Is Irie pronounced "Eerie" or "ear-ee-ay"? If the former... no, can't say I'm a fan. If the latter, you should know that's very close to the pronunciation of the Latin Irae, "wrath", as in Dies Irae:

Rosalie and Rosalind are on my own list. Raizele is awful, if you don't mind my being blunt.

I'm not a big fan of Sunshine, Keziah or Raizele. I like the rest, but Nancy just seemed to come out of left field. It's a totally different style than the rest.

I love Isaiah and Jamie is good, but I prefer it as a nickname for James.

for a girl
Sunshine - This is a thing, not a person
Rosalie (not after the vampire, it was my mom's name...will people just think of twilight though?) Yes. Sorry.
Rosalind/Rosalyn I like Rosalyn!
Maya
Felice
Leilani
Irie
Noelani
Keziah
Corina
Raizele (see above, rose or rosalie) Sounds like a goth/emo name to me. This is a name someone picks when they're 15 and adamant they're going to go join a Coven and hex people
Adrienne
Nancy
Scarlet

For a boy
Rashaun (I really like Rashaun Irie or Isaiah Rashaun...)
Skyler
Jamie
Isaiah

I love Maya & Isaiah! We named our 3rd girl Maya, and she would have been Isaiah if she'd been a boy.

I also really like Rosalie, and I had no idea there was one in twilight either. I'm kind of hoping that twilight as a thing is done, so maybe it wouldn't matter too much either way.

I'm very hippy myself, but I wouldn't choose Sunshine or Irie except maybe as a middle name or nickname (ours is Maya Sky). I also like Scarlet as a name, and it was always one of my top ones til I met a Scarlet who turned me off it completely. That's more a personal thing though, and it is a really pretty name.

TBH, those are the only ones I really like.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced "Eye-ree", unless there might be differences based on locale.

I like Rosalie and Adrienne for girls and Skyler and Jamie for boys, although Jamie can also be a girls name and there's possible ridicule there.

Im not a fan of sunshine but about Soleil, French for sun. We used that as my DD middle name. I like hippy kind of names too. My name is Aspen Noelle so you can see why :)

Leilani is a beautiful name and is one I'd consider for a girl.

I've always known about Twilight Rosalie but I don't care, it's a beautiful name and nn Rose/Rosie would be so cute.

When I see "Raizele" (first time I'm seeing this name, btw), "gazelle" comes to mind.

& Skyler is on my shortlist as well! except spelled Schuyler :)

Isaiah is wonderful! Skyler reminds me of ~trashy rednecks, idk why. I am from the UK though so my view is off haha. I love pretty much all those girls names, though not Sunshine.

Sunshine - hmmm...Sunny is a cute nickname
Rosalie - super cute! I have never read Twilight, so I didn't make the connection
Rosalind/Rosalyn - I especially love Rosalind.
Maya - I love this name, but keep in mind that a LOT of people are using it these days. As a piano teacher I had so many little students named Maya/Mya/Maia!
Felice - I've only ever met one girl with this name - love it. Also Felicia is cute.
Leilani - I hear this and assume there's probably a Hawaiian connection/affinity
Irie - a little weird
Noelani - again with the Hawaiian thing...
Keziah - this is a boy's name to me, but could be cute as a girls'!
Corina - LOVE!
Raizele (see above, rose or rosalie) - tough to spell and say, she'll get shit for it for years!
Adrienne - BEAUTIFUL!
Nancy - a little plain and old fashioned...
Scarlet - again, love it but super trendy and popular...

For a boy
Rashaun (I really like Rashaun Irie or Isaiah Rashaun...) - I like the second combination better!
Skyler - always cute
Jamie - one of my favorites
Isaiah - classic and strong!
