[identity profile] chillinbabejodi.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I've been thinking about a few names I'd never considered before:

Reuben
Peter - id previously only considered it as a middle but the more I think about it, the more I like it as a first name. However it's the name of a recently deceased grandparent and im worried it would cause controversy.

Oscar
Isaac
Harrison
Dylan
Declan
Laurel
Anabel
Fiona

WDYT? Feel free to offer suggestions you think I might like.

Not a big fan of Anabel (would like Annabelle better I think), Harrison, Reuben or Peter but I really like Oscar, Issac, Dylan, Declan, Laurel and Fiona. Probably only like Laurel so much because it's my given name. Fair warning, though I love my name, I've spent my entire life spelling it out and correct people about it. I was really frustrated by it as a child but I've gotten almost apathetic about it now, "Yes Laurel. Like the plant. Yes, there's a laurel plant. No it's not spelled L-A-U-R-A-L or L-O-R-R-E-L-L-E..."

Oscar, Harrison, Laurel, and Fiona were all on my list. I also like Declan, but I had to avoid D names because I already had one whose name started with that and I didn't want the matchy-ness.

I think the only one I wouldn't consider would be Dylan, mostly because of its popularity.

If I wanted to avoid hypocrisy I ought to dislike Fiona, because it's an invented name, just like Nevaeh or Jayden. Alright, I'm a hypocrite. I like Fiona.

Prefer the name spelled Annabelle, and it's not really my style. Don't like Harrison as a first at all. The drawback to Reuben is that it's a (delicious!) sandwich, and that "rube" is a hick.

Oscar is on my list.

How about Felix, Julian, and Iona?

I used to like Rueben until the one I met recently. He's a bit of a doucher, so not a fan of it in the least.

As for the rest I love:

Peter
Oscar
Isaac
Anabel
Fiona

I don't like the rest with the exception of Harrison which I'm kind of on the fence.

I didn't know that about Fiona but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's hypocritical of you to like it.

I've always had a strong aversion to Reuben. I think Anabel looks incomplete.

I like: Oscar, Harrison, and Declan

I'm fairly neutral on the rest.

Other ideas:
Raphael
Paul
Felix
Isaiah
Tate
Lane
Donovan

Lavinia
Arabella
Felicity

I love Peter, Oscar, Isaac, and Dylan for boys and Fiona for girls. I don't think using Peter would be controversial---it could be a way of honoring your grandfather. You could talk to a parent or a sibling (if you have any) and see what they think. If they really freak out, consider it for the middle slot. If not, use it as a first name.

What's a hick?

A hillbilly---a member of the rural poor.

Reuben is my recently deceased grandfather's name, so I love it, though his was spelled Ruben.
Oscar, Isaac, Dylan and Declan are faves.

Eye-own-ah like the island.

A hick is a redneck? A country bumpkin? Let me know if neither of these register either.

Reuben sandwich! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuben_sandwich)

I like all of them! I love Declan and Laurel... and I really like Dylan as well.

The only exception for me is Reuben. I've never liked the name, and to be honest I don't know why. Weirdly enough, though, it's grown on me as a nickname for Ruby... strange, I know! There's a little girl named Ruby where I work and we're constantly calling her "Rubes", "Rubster", or "Ruben"... and that's the only case I've ever liked it! It might just be that it fits her so well.
