Finally Decided

We have posted a few times about struggling to come up with a boys name for our second son.

Our first son is 2 and named Nicholas Cael, goes by his middle name of Cael.

We finally decided on a name for baby #2 due in December..... Nathaniel Leif, again will go by his middle name.

Both of our boys have standard christian names which was important to us that for the future of careers/etc they have the option of standard names, but both ended up with historical/ethnic/pagan names for their middle names, Cael is Welsh, and Leif is Scandinavian, my husband is a European mutt with some Welsh thrown in once upon a time, and my moms side is pretty much straight Norwegian, so it fits for us. My Granny was super excited when she found out we were going with a Norwegian middle name for this baby.

yay! I remember one of your posts and love your name choices, especially the middle names. Very well thought out names I was actually hoping I'd see your post when you decided on the second boys name! :D

thanks :D My mom thinks I'm nuts and gives me grief non-stop about how I should just have named my first son Cael and name the second one Leif and completely dismisses that we have an entire reason and personal logic behind why we want our sons to have standard first names. So having others like them does make me smile :P (all my friends love our naming style too, just my mother has to be a complete nag about it)

Congrats on deciding on a name. I work with pre-schoolers and have had a few Nathaniel's over the years, my experience has been that they are stubborn when they know they want something, but it is usually because they are perfectionists. They are sweet, funny, smart, helpful little boys and I have yet to meet one I didn't like. So I know you will have a blast with your own Nathaniel.

I think its a great idea and wish people who want to be really creative with names would do something like that! Not that your middle names are out there, different but not crazy:)

That's exactly our take on it, is we enjoy our son having a name that is completely unique to him (because really, how many Cael's do you know? :P) but at the same time, they are legit names (even if a few dozen centuries unused). BUT if in 5 years he decides he wants a normal name, or he becomes a lawyer, or a doctor, or really any profession he has a good standard name to use in his career life. And if he chooses to go by Cael forever, well so be it, he wont be the first person on the planet to go by their middle name because they like it better than their first, I have 3 different friends who do just that and only because they HATE their given names.

I LOVE Nicholas and Nathaniel. LOVELOVELOVE. I don't hate the middle names, they're just more guilty pleasure names for me because my husband and myself are very traditional. However, I do love your naming style.
