"hospital staff [was advised] to "guide" parents better when naming their newborns, warning that saddling children with a name they are constantly forced to explain risks causing what she called "moral damage."

Maybe it's because I'm Cuban-American, but I don't find these names shockingly wacky. I've heard some real bizarre ones in my lifetime! My cousin used to tell me in disgust what so-and-so has named their kid. "Can you believe it? What a stupid name." Haha!

Not sure if this guy is Cuban, but my cousin told me about this one actor whose name is Yotuel -- Yo, Tu, El -- I, You, He. Mashed up pronouns. And then someone she knew thought the name was a great idea!

I once read a fan fiction w/ a character named Jezebel. The name along made me form an opinion of her. It's kind of sad, because it's a nice name, just, can't be used now.

I have always been a secret lover of the name Jezebel. As for the Cuban names, all us Hispanics tend to screw up names in the hopes of them being unique. We all have that one weirdly named cousin, mine is Adny(f) she is named for her mom Ada and dad Natividad(Christmas, yes Christma!)

Oh, the irony of sending a kid named Jezebel to a Christian school...

(LOL, I just read your comment above.)

Dartanyan looks like somebody miss-spelled D'artagnan. As well, Jezebel is a particularly unfortunate name for a child in a religious school. I love the name, and I'm not christian, but even I wouldn't use it just because of the connotations. The rest... make my head hurt. LOL.

D'Artagnan is one of the main characters in The Three Musketeers. Dartanyan is how that would be pronounced phonetically in English.

While I don't particularly like any of these names, saying that they will cause "moral damage" is going a bit far. If the kid finds their name to be absolutely awful, they don't have to use it. Even if they named their kid Garbage Von Refuse, he could go by Gary, or even Bob. I know a kid who was one of a million Joshuas in his class and just started going by Walter (his middle name was Lee, so it was just something that he decided he liked).

I agree. Also, how offensive to the parents! If some nurse tried to "guide" me away from the name I had chosen for my child I would promptly tell her to fuck off and ask for a new nurse.
