Here are some strange names I've come across as I've been working recently. I work in a shop and parents are always shouting after their kids:

Girls:

Shadney
Kyri
Shaniqua (SHAN-EE-KWA
Cadence
Boadicea (BOW-DA-SIA)

Boys:

Sylar (SY-LA)
Diesel

I quite like Cadence. Hate Shaniqua and I'm just WTFing at Shadney because it just sounds so... gross. Boadicea is quite a handful to put on a little girl, but I like its origins. Kyri just reminds me of Kyrii, which is a Neopet from a virtual pet site.

Sylar. Again, it's a weird name for a child OR anyone for that matter, but I like that it came from Heroes, one of my favourite TV shows. And Diesel? Seriously? Okay for a pet, but for a child? No. And what about when the kid grows up?

So, what do you think?

I've always disliked Cadence, but I saw it used recently and realize I actually kind of like it now.

Boadicea is pretty and an interesting choice from a historic standpoint, but it seems like a bit much for a child.

I have a friend named Kaidance with a daughter named Kairi, lol. I like Cadence a lot, especially with the nickname Cady.

I don't like any of the other names. Yes to Diesel being a pet name-- my uncle has a dog named Diesel.

Sorry, but I heard this song years ago, and it was the first thing that popped into my head after I saw the name Shaniqua. And I was amused.

Boadicea? Thats just weird and super unattractive. It reminds me of "bodacious" which is just strange to relate to a name. It also reminds me of Boaz, which I also dislike.

Kyri is kind of pretty, actually. It's got a cute ring to it.

I've always loved Cadence, although now that my cousin named her dog Cadence, it has more of a "cute animal" connotation to it now, haha.

Shadley sounds like they were trying to be creatively-Celtic. It reminds me of Shanley, except a lot less attractive.

Oops, I thought it was "Shadley" not "Shadney." the latter is way worse, haha

Maybe Diesel is a nickname? I hope...

I like Cadence, but wouldn't actually use it.

Am confused as to why they're pronouncing Sylar without the R.

Bodadicea could be Bo for short, which I find really pretty :)

Cadence is *not* a weird name. I like Diesel. But I'm with you on the rest of them.

Yeaaaahh Sylar is actually my favourite character from Heroes, lol. I don't particularly like the name but I do love Gabriel because of his character.

Boadicea was a badass and that name instantly gets a pass from me. Hopefully her parents will teach her the origins of her name and she'll use that knowledge to her advantage.

I actually like Sylar for a boy.

I've never liked Shaniqua as a girl's name.

She was the queen of a British tribe who led an uprising against the Romans when they tried to take her shit. And I'll be tickled if any children of this era are familiar with the term "bodacious." Lol.

I am familiar with the origin, almost... warrior-like, but jeez. Can you imagine having to explain to your friends as a kid, "No, seriously, my name is really awesome, you just don't know!" LOL

The person will only be a child for 18 years - and probably only in the name-explaining/taunting stage for about 12 of those years. I like to think about how the person is going to be received as an adult, because that's how people spend the bulk of their lives :)

It's also all down to the kid's personality, too. Of course, you don't know when you name them, but I was the kind of kid who would've *loved* to shove that down other kids' throats every time it came up. "SHE WAS AN ENGLISH WARRIOR!!!" Lol.
