If you saw the name Johanna, how would you pronounce it? It's on the list for sure, but we don't want it to be a burden for our daughter. If there are many different ways that people will say it, that will affect our decision. Thanks for your help.

I'd think its said "Joana," but I'd say it as "Yoh-anna" just in case.

I would also say Jo-Hanna, but could see people saying Jo-anna, or Yo-anna, or Yo-hanna, it's a pretty name but definitely has the opportunity to be mispronounced

I was once babysat by a Johanna who said it "Jo-Hannah", which is how I would say it. But Jo-Hah-nah is also an option (this version sounds more European).

I've heard both Jo-Anna and Jo-Hannah. I think they're both correct - I'm not sure how burdensome it will be..I do think that both are lovely.

This is my niece's name, and she pronounces it Joe Anna. That is how I would pronounce it. I could also see Joe Hanna, but if I didn't know, I'd guess the H was silent.

FWIW, she does get a lot of flak for the name, and she is about 12. People tease her about it being an old lady name, and I suppose she is just old enough to be ahead of the granny name trend. She hates all the nicknames associated with Johanna, (Joey, Jojo, Josie, Jo, etc.) so she is always just Johanna. I'm pretty neutral on the name myself, I don't hate it or love it.

My moms name is Johanna! In Dutch - it's pronounced Yo-Hauna but only my grandparents call her that everyone else including herself says it Jo-Anna. Or just Jo :) I think it's really pretty!

Joanna. I've heard of one person who pronounces it Jo-Hannah, but to me that sounds wrong.

Joh is Jo.

I can' think of three with that name and all 3 pronounce it differently. one has silent 'h" but the end is like anna (short a). another pronounces the 'h' and the end is also like anna. the third also pronounces the 'h' but the end is more like ah-na.

Joe-hanna or Jo-hah-na. I've never heard of the "h" being silent.

Unless I know that the person is German or something, I pronounce it Joe-Anna. I'm REALLY not fond of the Joe-Hannah pronunciation if the family in question is English-speaking.

I would assume Jo Anna, but I've known a couple of people that pronounced it Jo Hannah. If you want Jo Anna, I would spell it Joanna. If you want Jo Hanna... eh, there's really no ideal solution. Johanna is going to get mispronounced as "Joanna" a lot, and Jo Hanna is going to cause confusion with records and such about whether Hanna is her middle name or a second first name.

Going the "Joanna" route means you'd get "joanne a lot instead, heh. At the very least I think the H there would prevent idiots not reading the A on the end, and if you pronounce it Jo - Hannah it would probably prevent a lot of Joanne talk as well, because Jo Hanne sounds kind of dumb.

/opinion of a Joanna.

Joe-Anna. I have a love/hate relationship with this name, because I love the spelling, and the way it looks but hate when people pronounce the H. And also, I know someone who was born Johanna but grew up and decided she didn't feel like a girl. He legally changed his name to Jae, began hormone replacement and saving up for surgery. And he's a loser... in that he is 25 dating 17 year old girls in high school and yet can't remain faithful to anyone. He's ruined a pretty name for me. So instead, I've replaced the Johanna I had on my baby list with Johnna (John-uh)... which I like quite a lot too.
